Chapter 10 - Claire’s Betrayal

Lily refused to believe the footage.

She watched it repeatedly.

Claire entered Sophie’s secured hospital room at 9:17 p.m.

She dismissed the nurse by claiming Sophie had become ill.

She wrapped the child in a blanket.

She used an access card belonging to a federal agent.

Then she carried Sophie through a laundry exit.

No one appeared to force her.

No one followed.

“She would never give Sophie to Julian,” Lily said.

Mercer paused the video.

“She may be trying to trade Sophie for Ethan.”

“She would not risk her daughter.”

“She may believe she can save both children.”

Victor studied the final frame.

Claire looked directly toward the camera before exiting.

Her left hand touched her right shoulder.

“What does that gesture mean?” he asked.

Lily stared.

When they were children, Claire had created signals for danger.

One hand to the shoulder meant someone was listening.

“She was being watched.”

“By whom?”

Lily examined the background.

A reflection moved across the metal laundry door.

A man stood outside the camera’s direct view.

He wore a federal security jacket.

Mercer recognized him.

“Agent Daniel Hargrove.”

“He supervised Claire’s transport.”

She called his team.

Hargrove did not answer.

His official vehicle had left the hospital three minutes after Claire.

Federal investigators began tracking it.

Charles remained in the chapel.

Victor demanded the truth about 1998.

Charles resisted until Mercer threatened to arrest him for obstruction.

“In 1998, Julian attempted to sell Blackwood shipping routes to an organized smuggling operation,” Charles said.

“Thomas Carter discovered it.”

“I buried the evidence.”

“Why?”

“Our father was dying.”

“A scandal would have destroyed the company.”

“You protected Julian.”

“I protected thousands of employees.”

Victor stepped closer.

“You protected our name.”

Charles did not deny it.

“The report proved Julian used false identity documents.”

“He was not legally a Blackwood.”

“I allowed him to remain.”

“You gave him time to become more dangerous.”

“Yes.”

Charles looked toward Amelia’s memorial.

“I believed gratitude would change him.”

“Instead, secrecy taught him he could survive anything.”

Victor opened the torn diary page.

“What is the address?”

“A lake house Julian used when he met Serena’s mother.”

“Is that where Ethan is?”

“It may be.”

“Why did you arrange the exchange?”

“Because Julian does not know I recovered Thomas’s original report.”

Charles removed a thin envelope from his coat.

“The document proves his mother falsified his birth records.”

“If we present it to the board and the trust court, Julian loses every inherited share.”

“Then why does he need Sophie?”

“Her existence gives him a new claim.”

“Through his daughter.”

“Yes.”

Charles’s face hardened.

“If Sophie is recognized as a Blackwood descendant, Julian can act through her.”

Lily’s anger rose.

“She is not a corporate weapon.”

“No.”

Charles looked ashamed.

“But that is how he sees her.”

Victor took the report.

“We are going to the lake house.”

Mercer objected.

“We do not know whether Ethan is there.”

“We know Claire is being taken there.”

“We also know Serena demanded Sophie.”

Victor looked toward Lily.

“You stay with Thomas.”

Lily shook her head.

“My sister is walking into a trap.”

“You have cracked ribs.”

“I have spent eighteen months believing Claire was dead.”

“I am not waiting in another room while someone takes her again.”

Victor understood there was no argument that would stop her.

The lake house stood forty miles north of Chicago.

It belonged to a company hidden behind North Lake Consulting.

The property was surrounded by forest on three sides and frozen shoreline on the fourth.

Mercer deployed teams beyond the perimeter.

Victor, Lily, Charles, and Marco approached in two vehicles.

Charles carried a briefcase containing the original report.

It held copies.

The original remained with Naomi Price.

Julian did not know that.

The house appeared dark.

A child’s cry came from inside.

Lily recognized Sophie.

She moved toward the door.

Victor stopped her.

“Wait.”

A light turned on in the upstairs window.

Claire appeared behind the glass.

Sophie was in her arms.

Agent Hargrove stood beside her with a gun.

Then Serena entered the room carrying Ethan.

Victor’s control nearly broke.

Ethan’s cast was visible beneath his blanket.

His face looked pale.

Serena placed him in a crib.

She turned toward the window and smiled.

The front door opened.

Julian Blackwood stood beneath the porch light.

He leaned on his silver-headed cane.

He resembled Charles around the eyes.

Everything else about him appeared colder.

“Welcome,” Julian said.

Victor approached.

“Bring the children outside.”

“You were always impatient.”

Julian looked toward Charles.

“Brother.”

Charles’s voice was flat.

“You are no brother of mine.”

“That sentence is nearly thirty years late.”

Julian tapped the briefcase with his cane.

“Is that the report?”

“Yes.”

“And the trust?”

Victor held the waterproof case.

“Yes.”

Julian smiled.

“You finally understand negotiation.”

“No.”

Victor’s gaze moved toward the upstairs window.

“I understand what frightened men do when their lies begin dying.”

Julian’s smile faded.

“You think I am frightened?”

“You hid behind Serena.”

“You hid behind Peter.”

“You hid behind my father’s silence.”

“You have spent your entire life borrowing power from other people.”

Julian stepped closer.

“And you inherited yours from a name I was denied.”

“You were denied nothing.”

Charles spoke.

“You were welcomed into this family.”

“You chose to steal from it.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“You let me sit beside you while knowing I was not your blood.”

“You allowed every board member to whisper about my mother.”

“You let me wear the name while making certain I could never truly own it.”

“I protected you.”

“You contained me.”

Serena appeared in the doorway.

She held a syringe against Ethan’s neck.

Victor stopped moving.

“Enough family history,” she said.

“Place both cases on the porch.”

Lily saw Ethan’s eyes.

He looked toward her.

“Li-Li.”

Serena pressed the needle closer.

Lily forced herself not to react.

Claire remained upstairs with Hargrove.

Her face showed terror.

Mercer’s voice came through Lily’s hidden earpiece.

“We have officers behind the east wall.”

“Do not act until Ethan is clear.”

Victor placed the trust beside the briefcase.

Julian opened the first case.

He examined the original trust.

Serena watched Victor.

“You could have made this easy.”

“You could have married me.”

“You could have signed the guardianship.”

“You could have returned to your meetings and allowed me to manage the child.”

“He is my son.”

“He is a signature with lungs.”

Lily moved one step forward.

Serena looked at her.

“You ruined everything with that recorder.”

“No.”

Lily’s voice remained calm.

“You ruined everything when you believed no one weaker than you mattered.”

Serena smiled.

“That sounds brave.”

“It will sound less impressive when Ethan watches you die.”

Victor moved.

Julian raised a gun.

“Stop.”

Hargrove dragged Claire downstairs.

Sophie clung to her.

Julian looked at Claire.

“Sign the maternity affidavit.”

“No.”

“State that Amelia stole Ethan from you.”

“She did not.”

“She lied to Victor.”

“She protected Ethan.”

“Sign it.”

Claire looked toward Lily.

Her hand touched her right shoulder.

Someone was still listening.

Lily looked toward Hargrove.

His grip on Claire appeared firm.

His thumb was not around her wrist.

He was pretending.

Hargrove was not working for Julian.

He was helping Claire maintain the illusion.

Claire suddenly dropped to the floor.

Hargrove fired toward the ceiling.

Mercer’s team breached the windows.

Chaos filled the house.

Victor lunged toward Serena.

She threw the syringe.

Marco caught Ethan as Serena released him.

Lily pulled Sophie beneath the staircase.

Julian struck Charles with the silver cane.

The old man fell.

Hargrove turned his weapon toward Julian.

Peter Lang appeared from the rear hallway.

He had escaped federal custody.

He shot Hargrove in the chest.

Claire screamed.

Peter grabbed the trust document.

Julian seized the briefcase.

Serena ran toward the rear exit.

Marco handed Ethan to Lily and pursued her.

Lily held both children.

Ethan cried against one shoulder.

Sophie clung to the other.

Victor fought Peter near the fireplace.

Peter struck him with the metal case.

Julian opened the rear door.

Mercer fired.

The bullet struck the doorframe.

Julian disappeared into the snow.

Serena followed.

Peter tore away from Victor and escaped through the kitchen.

Officers secured the house.

Hargrove remained alive beneath his protective vest.

Charles suffered a head wound but remained conscious.

The children were safe.

The trust document was gone.

The original report remained inside the briefcase Julian carried.

Charles looked toward Victor.

“That was the only copy.”

Victor wiped blood from his lip.

“No.”

Charles stared.

Victor nodded toward Naomi’s secure message.

“She kept the original.”

For the first time, Charles almost smiled.

Then Lily noticed Claire standing near the broken window.

Her face had gone pale.

“What is wrong?” Lily asked.

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Serena said something before they arrived.”

“What?”

“She said Ethan’s breathing episodes were not only meant to force the guardianship.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“She said the sedative was preparing him for a procedure.”

Victor approached.

“What procedure?”

Claire looked at Sophie.

“A bone marrow transplant.”

Lily stared at her.

“Why would either child need a transplant?”

Claire reached inside the coat Hargrove had given her.

She removed a medical report stolen from Julian’s clinic.

The patient name had been hidden beneath a number.

The genetic markers matched Ethan and Sophie.

The recipient was an adult Blackwood relative.

Lily read the final page.

The procedure had been scheduled for three days after Victor’s wedding.

The adult patient was Charles Blackwood.

Charles looked at the report in disbelief.

“I never agreed to this.”

Claire shook her head.

“The transplant was not for you.”

She pointed toward a second identifier.

Julian had the same rare blood disorder as Charles.

He had been using Charles’s identity to obtain treatment.

Ethan and Sophie were not merely heirs.

Julian had created them as medical insurance.

A phone rang inside the abandoned house.

Victor answered.

Julian spoke from somewhere beyond the trees.

“You saved the children tonight.”

“But three days from now, one of them will save me.”

The call ended.

Outside, Marco shouted.

Fresh tire tracks led away from the property.

Someone had taken Claire’s medical file.

When Lily turned, Serena was no longer among the captured suspects.

She had escaped with Peter.

May you like

On the wall beside the rear door, they had left a message written in red lipstick.

THE WEDDING IS STILL ON.
