Chapter 19 - Amelia’s Return

The video lasted nine seconds.

Amelia stood behind Ethan and Benjamin.

A scar crossed the left side of her face.

Her hair was shorter.

She looked thinner.

She was unmistakably alive.

Ethan reached toward her without fear.

Benjamin sat beside him.

“Victor, do not come for us.”

The screen went black.

Victor remained motionless.

The museum disappeared around him.

For eleven months, he had mourned Amelia.

He had stood beside an empty grave.

He had blamed himself for her final call.

Now she was alive with both sons.

Lily reached him.

“That may be prerecorded.”

“It is not.”

Victor recognized Amelia’s breathing pattern.

He recognized the way she touched the edge of a table when frightened.

“Why would she tell me not to come?”

“Because someone is forcing her.”

“Or because she does not trust me.”

Mercer secured the museum.

Serena surrendered after Claire disarmed her.

Margaret survived the gunshot.

Peter escaped through the archive tunnels.

He took the tablet containing the Vale records.

The explosives were real but had not been activated.

The twins’ location was identified through details in the video.

Amelia’s childhood home stood on a private island in Lake Michigan.

Margaret had kept it under a false company name.

Winter conditions made the crossing dangerous.

Helicopter access was limited by heavy wind.

The island had one dock and an old service tunnel entering beneath the shoreline.

Mercer prepared a tactical approach.

Victor wanted to enter immediately.

Lily stopped him.

“Amelia warned you not to come.”

“She may be protecting the boys.”

“From Peter?”

“From everyone.”

Claire joined them.

“She may believe Victor was involved.”

“The recording made Charles sound responsible.”

“Peter could have shown her altered evidence for months.”

Victor looked toward Margaret’s ambulance.

“She knew Amelia was alive.”

Margaret admitted the truth after Mercer threatened charges connected to the twins.

Amelia survived the crash.

Peter reached the vehicle before emergency crews.

He transported her to a Vale clinic.

She suffered severe injuries and memory loss.

Margaret hid her.

“Why?” Victor demanded.

“To protect her.”

“You let me believe she was dead.”

“She believed you ordered Peter to stop her.”

“I did not.”

Margaret’s face showed no regret.

“You benefited from her silence.”

“I lost my wife.”

“You became engaged within six months.”

Victor looked as though she had struck him.

Lily stepped between them.

“Serena entered his life because Julian arranged it.”

Margaret looked toward her.

“And he welcomed her.”

Victor accepted the accusation.

He had been lonely.

He had been afraid.

He had accepted Serena’s carefully designed affection because it required less honesty than confronting Amelia’s warnings.

That weakness did not make him responsible for the conspiracy.

It explained why Serena entered so easily.

Margaret provided the island access codes.

She warned that Amelia might resist rescue.

“She remembers pieces.”

“She remembers Claire.”

“She remembers the children.”

“She does not remember Victor clearly.”

Lily looked at him.

“Then let me approach first.”

Victor hated the idea.

He also knew Amelia’s letter had named Lily.

If Amelia trusted anyone connected to the outside world, it might be her.

The team crossed the lake before dawn.

Marco entered through the service tunnel.

Mercer’s officers surrounded the house.

Victor and Lily approached the front door.

It opened before they knocked.

Amelia stood inside.

She held a kitchen knife.

A scar disappeared beneath her collar.

Her eyes moved from Lily to Victor.

“Stay back.”

Victor stopped.

“Amelia.”

She flinched at the sound of his voice.

“You sent Peter.”

“No.”

“You told him to stop me.”

“My father did.”

Amelia looked confused.

“He used your name.”

“Peter lied.”

Lily stepped forward slowly.

“My name is Lily Carter.”

Amelia looked at her.

“Claire’s sister.”

“Yes.”

“You protect Ethan.”

“Yes.”

Amelia’s hand trembled.

“Where is Claire?”

“Safe.”

“Sophie?”

“Safe.”

“Julian?”

“Arrested.”

“Serena?”

“Arrested.”

Amelia laughed weakly.

“They always escape.”

“Not this time.”

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Victor looked toward the staircase.

Peter appeared holding Benjamin.

A gun rested against the boy’s side.

Ethan stood behind him.

“Daddy.”

Victor moved.

Peter tightened his grip.

“Stay.”

Amelia turned toward Peter.

“You said Victor ordered everything.”

“He did.”

“No.”

Amelia looked at Lily.

“She has Claire’s eyes when she tells the truth.”

Peter’s expression hardened.

“You would trust a stranger?”

“She was the only person in my letter.”

Peter laughed.

“You wrote that before the crash.”

“Before you learned what Victor became.”

Victor’s voice remained controlled.

“Give me the children.”

“You have nothing left to trade.”

Peter held up the Vale tablet.

“I have every fertility record, every payment, every falsified birth.”

“I have enough to collapse the Blackwood company and destroy thousands of families.”

“Then release it.”

Peter stared.

Victor continued.

“Publish everything connected to me.”

“Expose my father.”

“Expose Amelia.”

“Expose the trust.”

“Leave the unrelated patients protected.”

“You would surrender the company?”

“Yes.”

“Your name?”

“Yes.”

“Your sons’ inheritance?”

“They can inherit something better than fear.”

Peter’s control weakened.

He had expected bargaining.

Victor offered surrender.

The secrets lost value when Victor stopped defending the Blackwood image.

Amelia moved closer to the staircase.

“Peter.”

He looked toward her.

“You kept me alive because I was useful.”

“You kept Benjamin alive because he was useful.”

“You do not know what to do when people stop being assets.”

Peter aimed at Victor.

“You still die.”

Amelia threw the knife.

It struck Peter’s wrist.

The gun fell.

Benjamin slipped from his arm.

Lily caught the child at the base of the stairs.

Victor tackled Peter.

They crashed against the railing.

Ethan crawled toward Amelia.

Marco entered through the upper hall.

Peter broke free.

He ran toward the balcony overlooking the lake.

Victor followed.

The balcony floor was covered in ice.

Peter reached the railing.

Mercer blocked the door behind him.

“It is over.”

Peter looked at the frozen water below.

“No.”

He held the tablet above the railing.

“Every secret disappears with me.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Then go.”

Peter stared.

“You will not stop me?”

“The records are not worth another life.”

Peter’s face changed.

For decades, he had survived by making people choose secrets over people.

Victor refused the choice.

Peter looked toward Charles’s son.

Then toward Amelia.

Then toward the children crying inside the house.

He dropped the tablet onto the balcony.

He raised his hands.

Mercer approached with restraints.

Peter suddenly pulled a hidden blade.

He lunged toward Victor.

Amelia shouted.

Victor moved aside.

Peter slipped on the ice.

He struck the railing and fell over it.

His hand caught the lower bar.

He hung above the frozen lake.

Victor grabbed his wrist.

Peter stared up at him.

“Why?”

“Because I will not become you.”

Marco helped pull Peter onto the balcony.

Mercer arrested him.

The final Blackwood enemy left the island alive to face every charge.

Inside the house, Amelia knelt before Ethan.

The boy watched her carefully.

She touched his cheek.

“I’m your mother.”

Ethan looked toward Lily.

Then toward Victor.

He leaned against Amelia.

Victor turned away to hide his emotion.

Lily stood beside him.

“She remembers him.”

“She remembers everyone except me.”

“Give her time.”

Victor looked through the window.

“What if time does not return us to what we were?”

“It should not.”

Lily’s answer surprised him.

“Too much happened.”

“You cannot rebuild the past.”

“You can only decide what comes after it.”

Amelia approached them.

Her expression was uncertain.

“I remember loving you.”

Victor’s eyes filled.

“I remember hurting because you never listened.”

He nodded.

“You were right.”

“I do not remember enough to forgive you.”

“I will not ask you to.”

Amelia looked at Lily.

“Claire said you would run toward him.”

“She was right.”

The island medical team arrived.

The children were safe.

Peter’s tablet contained encrypted backups.

Federal experts could preserve innocent patient privacy while exposing the crimes.

Julian, Serena, Margaret, Peter, Judge Voss, and multiple officials would face prosecution.

The conspiracy had ended.

Then Claire received a call from Naomi Price.

A final guardianship document had been located inside Amelia’s island room.

It had been signed after the crash.

Amelia named herself sole guardian of both twins.

She also requested immediate termination of Victor’s parental rights.

The document had been notarized by Peter Lang.

Victor looked toward Amelia.

“Did you sign it?”

Amelia stared at the signature.

“I don’t remember.”

Peter laughed from inside the police transport.

“She signed it willingly.”

May you like

Amelia’s return had saved the children.

It could also take them from Victor forever.
