Chapter 14: The Verdict
The jury deliberated for seven hours.
Mariana waited in a private room with Nico, Lucia, Rebecca, Beckett, and Priya.
Nico was building a tower from paper cups.
He had grown taller during the year.
He still disliked boats.
He still woke from nightmares sometimes.
But he laughed again.
That mattered more than any verdict.
A court officer opened the door.
“They’re ready.”
The courtroom filled within minutes.
Rodrigo stood beside his attorneys.
Elena sat at another table under the terms of her cooperation agreement.
Gabriel looked pale.
Adrian stared at Mariana as if he still expected her to save him.
The foreperson rose.
Rodrigo was found guilty of attempted murder.
Guilty of conspiracy.
Guilty of kidnapping.
Guilty of fraud, bribery, obstruction, and evidence destruction.
Adrian was convicted on all major conspiracy charges.
Gabriel received a reduced conviction after cooperating.
Elena pleaded guilty to attempted murder and conspiracy.
At sentencing, Rodrigo was given life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Adrian received thirty-two years.
Gabriel received sixteen.
Elena received eighteen.
Before officers led her away, Elena turned toward Mariana.
Her lips formed two words.
I’m sorry.
Mariana did not respond.
Apologies could acknowledge harm.
They could not erase it.
Rodrigo requested permission to address the court.
The judge allowed it.
He turned toward Mariana.
“You believe you won,” he said. “But the Salcedo name gave you everything.”
Mariana stood beside Nico.
“No.”
Rodrigo waited.
“My grandmother gave me courage. My son gave me a reason to survive. You gave me a warning.”
His face hardened.
“What warning?”
“That power without conscience destroys everyone who touches it.”
The officers took him away.
Nico squeezed Mariana’s hand.
“Is Grandpa coming back?”
“No.”
“Are we safe now?”
Mariana looked at the people who had helped uncover the truth.
Then she looked at her son.
“Yes.”
