Chapter 9: Beneath the Hotel

The old Salcedo Hotel had been closed for renovations for almost a year.

Its marble lobby stood empty beneath covered chandeliers.

Federal agents entered before dawn.

Mariana, Beckett, and Priya followed after the building was cleared.

The original wine cellar lay beneath three levels of concrete.

Behind a rack of dusty bottles, they found a steel door.

The silver key fit the lock.

Beyond it was a corridor lined with surveillance cameras.

At the end stood a private vault.

Inside, Rodrigo Salcedo had preserved the history of his empire.

Rows of shelves held ledgers, photographs, contracts, and sealed envelopes.

Hard drives sat inside fireproof cabinets.

One wall displayed photographs of judges, mayors, police officials, senators, journalists, and business rivals.

Each photograph had a date and payment amount written beneath it.

“He didn’t have partners,” Beckett said.

“He had property,” Mariana replied.

Priya opened the first drive.

It contained videos of politicians accepting cash.

Another showed the police commissioner discussing false evidence.

A third revealed Adrian signing a guardianship agreement.

Upon Mariana’s death, Adrian would receive five million dollars annually to control Nico’s shares.

Mariana looked away.

At the back of the vault, she found a cabinet labeled MARIANA.

Inside were school reports, private medical records, photographs, and recordings of conversations she believed had been confidential.

Rodrigo had monitored her for years.

A folder contained a detailed plan titled:

CONTINGENCIES FOLLOWING MARITIME INCIDENT

If Mariana died, the death would be ruled self-inflicted.

If she survived, she would be declared unstable.

If she resisted treatment, Adrian would seek custody.

If the footage emerged, Elena would accept blame.

Rodrigo had planned to sacrifice his wife.

He had planned to sacrifice everyone.

Beckett opened another cabinet.

Inside were files on Daniel Cortez.

The missing journalist.

The final document was a handwritten order authorizing payment to two men.

The date matched the night Cortez disappeared.

“This may be enough to reopen the case,” Beckett said.

A sound came from behind the wall.

A faint knock.

Agents raised their weapons.

The noise came again.

They discovered a second hidden door behind the file cabinet.

Inside was a small locked room.

Lucia lay on the floor.

She was alive.

Barely conscious, dehydrated, and weak, but alive.

Mariana dropped beside her.

“Lucia.”

Her sister opened her eyes.

“He said no one would find me.”

Mariana took her hand.

“He was wrong.”

For the second time, she survived.
