Chapter 5: The Husband Who Never Called
Adrian appeared on television that evening.
He stood outside a private hotel, dressed in a gray suit with no tie.
His expression was carefully wounded.
“I have loved Mariana for eleven years,” he told reporters. “But she has been under tremendous pressure. My only concern is our son.”
Mariana watched from a secure federal apartment.
Nico sat beside her drawing a picture of a yellow dog.
“Why is Daddy saying you’re sick?” he asked.
Mariana muted the television.
“Because Daddy made a very bad choice.”
“Is he coming here?”
“No.”
Nico stared at his drawing.
“Did he know we were in the water?”
Mariana could not lie.
“Yes.”
Her son’s lower lip trembled.
“He didn’t come get us.”
“No.”
Nico placed the crayon down.
“I don’t want to see him.”
Mariana pulled him close.
“You don’t have to.”
The following morning, Adrian filed for emergency custody.
His attorneys claimed Mariana was unstable, paranoid, and dangerous.
They submitted statements from family doctors, household employees, and three Salcedo executives.
One doctor claimed Mariana had suffered delusions for years.
Mariana had met the man only twice.
Another affidavit came from her mother.
Elena wrote that Mariana had threatened to “take Nico somewhere no one could find them.”
The statement was true.
Mariana had said it after discovering the missing charity funds.
But Elena had removed the reason.
“They’re building a medical history after the fact,” attorney Rebecca Sloan said.
Rebecca had represented whistleblowers, federal witnesses, and victims of corporate retaliation.
She placed the court documents on the table.
“They want a sealed hearing tomorrow.”
“They think the footage is still hidden,” Mariana said.
“We should release it tonight.”
“No.”
Rebecca frowned.
“Your husband is trying to take your son.”
“My father expects us to reveal the deck footage. He will blame my mother and claim he was shocked.”
“You have the office recording.”
“And he will say the audio was manipulated.”
“Then what are you waiting for?”
“Something he can’t explain away.”
Mariana opened the financial ledger.
Several transfers were marked with the initials L.S.R.
The same initials appeared beside property deeds and overseas accounts.
Priya had traced the name.
Lucia Salcedo Rivera.
Rodrigo’s secret daughter.
Her mother was Sofia Rivera, the woman Mariana had always known as her father’s widowed cousin.
Lucia was twenty-nine years old.
And she had vanished three days before the yacht attack.
Mariana looked at Beckett.
“My father didn’t only plan to erase me.”
