Chapter 17: The Fire

Chapter 17: The Fire
The call came at 2:13 a.m.
James woke to the piercing sound of the estate's emergency alarm.
He glanced at the security monitor.
A flashing red warning covered the screen.
FIRE DETECTED – EAST WING
His blood ran cold.
He grabbed the emergency phone.
"Mr. Caldwell!"
Ethan answered instantly.
"What happened?"
"There's a fire."
Within seconds, the quiet mansion became chaos.
Smoke poured from the east wing.
Housekeepers hurried through the halls.
Security officers rushed toward the source.
The fire alarms screamed through every room.
Ethan burst from his bedroom.
"Everyone outside!"
James was already directing the staff toward the front lawn.
"The kitchen is clear!"
"The library is empty!"
"The west wing is evacuated!"
Then Rosa's terrified voice echoed through the hallway.
"Lily!"
Everyone froze.
Earlier that evening, Lily had begged to spend her first full night in the restored nursery.
After weeks of asking, Rosa had finally agreed.
"I'll sleep right across the hall," Ethan had promised.
Lily had smiled happily.
"I know."
But sometime after midnight, a faulty electrical wire inside the old east wing walls sparked behind a decorative panel.
Within minutes, flames spread through the ceiling.
The smoke moved faster than the fire.
"Lily!"
Rosa tried to run upstairs.
James caught her.
"You can't!"
"My daughter is up there!"
"The stairs are collapsing!"
"I don't care!"
She struggled against him.
Tears streamed down her face.
"Please!"
Ethan looked toward the staircase.
Thick black smoke rolled down from the second floor.
The firefighters hadn't arrived yet.
There wasn't time.
He turned to James.
"Where is she?"
"The nursery."
"The east hallway."
"The fire's already there."
James grabbed Ethan's arm.
"You can't."
Ethan looked at him calmly.
"My daughter is in that room."
Without another word...
He ran into the flames.
Smoke swallowed the hallway almost instantly.
The heat was unbearable.
Every breath burned.
He covered his mouth with his sleeve and pushed forward.
"Lily!"
No answer.
The nursery door appeared through the smoke.
It was closed.
He grabbed the handle.
Too hot.
He wrapped his jacket around his hand and forced it open.
Inside...
The room was filled with smoke.
But the flames hadn't reached it yet.
"Lily!"
A tiny frightened voice answered from beneath the bed.
"Daddy?"
Relief nearly brought him to his knees.
"I'm here."
"I got scared."
"I know."
He dropped to the floor, crawling through the smoke.
Lily clung to Button with one hand.
The other reached for him.
"I couldn't find Mama."
He gathered her into his arms.
"You found me."
As Ethan turned toward the door...
A burning beam crashed across the hallway outside.
The exit disappeared beneath flames.
For one terrifying second...
He realized they were trapped.
Outside, firefighters finally arrived.
Chief Daniel Brooks studied the burning mansion.
"Anyone inside?"
James answered immediately.
"Mr. Caldwell."
"And his daughter."
The chief cursed under his breath.
"How long?"
"Three minutes."
He turned to his crew.
"Move!"
Inside the nursery, Ethan searched desperately.
One window.
Too high.
He broke the glass with a heavy chair.
Cold night air rushed into the room.
"Lily."
She looked up at him.
"I need you to be brave."
She nodded immediately.
"I'm brave."
"I know you are."
He wrapped her tightly inside a heavy quilt.
Then lifted her toward the broken window.
Outside, firefighters raised a rescue ladder.
"We've got her!"
Ethan carefully passed Lily into waiting hands.
She reached desperately toward him.
"Daddy!"
"I'm right behind you."
"I don't want to leave!"
"You have to."
She began crying.
"You promised!"
He smiled through the smoke.
"I promised I'd stay."
"I am."
The firefighters carried Lily safely down the ladder.
The crowd erupted in relieved cheers.
Rosa ran forward, taking Lily into her arms.
"My baby!"
Lily sobbed against her shoulder.
"Daddy's still inside!"
Rosa looked up.
The nursery window had disappeared behind thick black smoke.
Inside...
The ceiling groaned.
Ethan turned toward the hallway.
The only remaining exit was already collapsing.
He took one step.
Then another.
A burning beam crashed beside him.
The impact threw him violently against the wall.
His shoulder struck the stone.
His head hit the floor.
For a moment...
Everything went dark.
Outside, Lily screamed.
"Daddy!"
No one could stop her crying.
She reached toward the burning house.
"He promised!"
Rosa held her tightly.
"He'll come."
But her own voice shook.
Because she wasn't sure.
Fire Chief Brooks shouted into his radio.
"Rescue Team Two!"
"We've still got one victim inside!"
The firefighters disappeared into the smoke.
Minutes passed.
They felt like hours.
Then—
Movement.
Two firefighters emerged from the front entrance.
Between them...
They carried Ethan.
His clothes were scorched.
Blood ran down one side of his forehead.
His right arm hung unnaturally still.
He wasn't moving.
"Lily..."
The word barely escaped his lips before he lost consciousness.
Rosa dropped to her knees beside him.
"Ethan!"
The paramedics pushed gently between them.
"We need space!"
Lily clung to Rosa.
"Daddy!"
One paramedic checked Ethan's pulse.
Another fitted an oxygen mask.
The third looked toward the ambulance.
"Move!"
As the ambulance doors closed, Rosa climbed inside without hesitation.
Lily reached for Ethan's uninjured hand.
Her tiny fingers wrapped around his.
Even unconscious...
His hand slowly tightened around hers.
The paramedic looked away quietly.
Some moments deserved privacy.
The ambulance sped into the night.
Fire engines remained behind, fighting the flames that consumed part of the old mansion.
James stood silently beside Fire Chief Brooks.
The chief removed his helmet.
"That man..."
He looked toward the disappearing ambulance.
"...didn't run into that house because he's a billionaire."
James nodded.
"No."
"He ran in because he's a father."
Several hours later, the surgeons wheeled Ethan into the operating room.
The emergency physician met Rosa in the waiting area.
"He has a concussion."
"A broken collarbone."
"Smoke inhalation."
"And second-degree burns."
Rosa's face went pale.
"Will he recover?"
The doctor hesitated.
"We're doing everything we can."
The operating room doors closed.
The red surgical light turned on.
Lily looked up at Rosa with frightened eyes.
"Mama?"
"Yes?"
"Is Daddy going to wake up?"
Rosa held her daughter close.
She wanted to promise everything would be alright.
Instead...
She whispered the only honest answer she had.
"I pray he does."
The waiting room fell silent.
And for the first time since Ethan Caldwell had walked back into their lives...
May you like
Rosa realized how impossible it would be to lose him again.
