Chapter 3: The Question No One Could Escape

Chapter 3: The Question No One Could Escape

No one moved.

The question lingered in the air like shattered glass.

"Is she mine?"

Rosa stared at Ethan, her heart pounding so violently she thought everyone in the room could hear it. For three years, she had imagined this moment in a hundred different ways. Sometimes he was angry. Sometimes he laughed. Sometimes he turned his back and walked away.

She had never imagined him looking... broken.

Lily buried her tear-streaked face against Rosa's shoulder, tiny fingers clutching the fabric of her uniform.

"Mama..."

"I'm here, sweetheart," Rosa whispered, kissing the top of her daughter's head. "You're safe."

Ethan waited.

He wasn't demanding.

He wasn't accusing.

He simply waited, as though his entire future depended on the next words Rosa chose.

Victoria finally broke the silence.

"This is insane," she snapped. "Ethan, she's manipulating you."

No one answered her.

She stepped closer, pointing at Rosa.

"She worked her way into this house with a child that conveniently looks like you. Do you seriously not see what's happening?"

Rosa slowly stood, still holding Lily.

"I didn't come here for your money."

Victoria laughed.

"Oh, please."

"I came because I needed a job."

"And somehow the billionaire you supposedly dated years ago happens to become your employer?"

"It wasn't planned."

Victoria folded her arms.

"Right."

Ethan finally looked away from Lily and toward Rosa.

"Answer me."

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Rosa closed her eyes for a moment.

When she opened them again, there were tears she refused to let fall.

"Yes."

The single word landed harder than any scream.

Victoria blinked.

"What?"

Rosa looked directly at Ethan.

"She's your daughter."

Silence swallowed the room.

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

For a man who had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking, he suddenly seemed unable to process one simple sentence.

"My..."

His voice cracked.

"My daughter?"

Rosa nodded once.

"I found out after you disappeared."

"I didn't disappear."

"You stopped answering."

"I—"

"You stopped."

He searched her face desperately.

"I thought you left me."

"I thought you left me."

Neither of them spoke again.

Years of misunderstanding stood between them like a wall neither had known still existed.

Victoria shook her head violently.

"No."

She laughed again, louder this time.

"This is ridiculous."

She looked at Ethan.

"Tell me you don't believe this."

Ethan didn't answer.

Instead, he slowly knelt in front of Lily.

He kept a respectful distance, careful not to frighten her.

"Hi."

Lily peeked from behind Rosa's shoulder.

Her gray-green eyes met his.

The same eyes that had stared back at him from every mirror since childhood.

"Hi."

His throat tightened.

"I'm Ethan."

"I know."

"You do?"

"Mama has pictures."

Rosa froze.

Ethan looked up sharply.

"You kept my pictures?"

Rosa looked away.

"I never threw them out."

Victoria's face turned pale.

"You kept pictures of him?"

"They belonged to Lily."

Victoria stared at them as if the entire world had suddenly shifted beneath her feet.

"This..."

She pointed between them.

"...this has to be some kind of joke."

Lily suddenly whimpered and rubbed her left arm.

The movement caught Ethan's attention.

Dark fingerprints were already appearing beneath the sleeve of her pink hoodie.

His expression changed instantly.

"What happened to her arm?"

Rosa carefully rolled up the sleeve.

Purple bruises had begun blooming around Lily's tiny upper arm.

The exact shape of an adult hand.

Ethan looked at Victoria.

His voice became frighteningly calm.

"Did you do that?"

Victoria swallowed.

"I barely touched her."

"You shoved her."

"I was trying to get her off the piano."

"You grabbed a three-year-old."

"She wasn't listening!"

"She's three."

"I didn't mean for her to fall."

"But she did."

Victoria's confidence began slipping.

"It was an accident."

Lily looked at Ethan with watery eyes.

"The pretty lady got mad."

No one corrected her.

"The floor hurt," Lily whispered.

Something inside Ethan snapped.

He turned toward the hallway.

"James."

Within seconds, the head of household security appeared.

"Yes, Mr. Caldwell?"

"Call my physician."

"Immediately, sir."

"And prepare the SUV."

James hesitated only long enough to glance at the crying child.

"Right away."

Victoria stepped forward.

"Ethan, you're overreacting."

He ignored her.

She grabbed his arm.

"Ethan."

He slowly removed her hand.

The gesture was gentle.

But final.

"If that had been anyone else's child," he said quietly, "I would still be taking her to a hospital."

Victoria's jaw tightened.

"So you're choosing them."

"I'm choosing a child who was injured in my home."

"You don't even know she's yours."

Ethan looked at Lily again.

"I know enough."

Rosa shook her head.

"You don't have to do this."

"Yes," Ethan answered.

"I do."

A black SUV pulled into the circular driveway less than two minutes later.

James held the front door open.

Ethan reached for Lily.

"May I?"

Lily looked at Rosa.

Rosa hesitated.

For three years she had protected this little girl from every uncertainty the world could throw at them.

Now the greatest uncertainty of all stood in front of her.

"It's okay," she whispered.

Lily slowly reached toward Ethan.

He lifted her as though she were made of glass.

She weighed almost nothing.

Her little rabbit slipped from her arm and landed on the marble floor.

Ethan bent immediately to pick it up.

"What is this?"

"My Button."

"He goes everywhere?"

Lily nodded.

"He gets scared."

Ethan smiled sadly.

"So do I."

For the first time since entering the room, Lily gave him the smallest smile.

Victoria watched in disbelief.

"Ethan..."

He turned.

"I'm going to the hospital."

"The investors arrive in four hours."

"They can wait."

"Our parents are coming."

"They can wait."

"The wedding planner—"

"Can wait."

She stared at him.

"And what exactly am I supposed to tell everyone?"

Ethan looked at the woman he had planned to marry.

Then he looked at the little girl asleep against his shoulder, one tiny hand unconsciously gripping the lapel of his jacket.

His answer came without hesitation.

"Tell them the truth."

"What truth?"

He met Victoria's eyes.

"That today..."

His voice was calm.

"...my priorities changed."

Without another word, Ethan carried Lily out of the mansion.

Rosa followed close behind.

Victoria remained alone in the silent parlor, surrounded by shattered porcelain, spilled coffee, and a piano no one dared touch.

For the first time since the engagement, she realized she wasn't losing a wedding.

May you like

She was losing Ethan.

And somewhere deep inside her, a terrible certainty whispered that she had already lost him the moment she laid a hand on that little girl.
