Chapter 5

Chapter 6: The Wedding Dress
The next morning, Ethan woke before dawn.
He hadn't slept.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Lily running toward him with that fearless smile, wrapping her tiny arms around his waist as though she had known him forever.
He wasn't ready for how much that simple embrace had changed him.
For thirty-eight years, he'd believed success was measured in acquisitions, balance sheets, and headlines.
Now all he wanted was to hear a three-year-old laugh again.
Victoria was already awake.
She stood in the master bedroom before the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the engagement ring sparkling on her finger.
It suddenly felt heavier than it ever had.
She turned as Ethan entered.
"You were gone again last night."
"I stopped by to see Lily."
"You mean Rosa."
"I mean Lily."
The correction stung.
Victoria forced a smile.
"I have good news."
Ethan looked at her.
"The DNA results."
His heartbeat quickened.
"What about them?"
"I spoke to someone at the lab."
"You did what?"
"The child isn't yours."
Silence.
Victoria stepped closer.
"The probability wasn't even fifty percent."
Ethan's expression darkened.
"Who told you that?"
"A friend."
"The results were canceled."
She froze.
"What?"
"There was a processing error."
Color slowly drained from her face.
"That's impossible."
"It isn't."
"The report—"
"Was invalid."
For the first time since he'd known her, Ethan watched Victoria lose control of her carefully polished composure.
"You don't know that."
"I do."
"Maybe they're covering for her."
"The laboratory admitted the mistake."
Victoria turned away, her mind racing.
If Ethan learned she had secretly contacted the lab, everything would unravel.
She swallowed hard.
"I... I only wanted to protect you."
Ethan looked at her quietly.
"From what?"
"From being manipulated."
He studied her face.
"And if Lily is my daughter?"
Victoria didn't answer.
Because she couldn't.
Later that afternoon, a delivery truck arrived at the estate.
Inside one enormous white garment bag was Victoria's custom wedding gown.
Handmade in Milan.
Silk.
French lace.
Nearly six months of work.
The designer personally flew to Connecticut for the fitting.
Three assistants carefully carried it into the bridal suite.
Victoria dismissed them.
"I'd like a moment alone."
As the door closed, she slowly unzipped the garment bag.
The dress shimmered beneath the soft lights.
It was perfect.
It was supposed to become the most photographed dress in America.
Instead...
She imagined Rosa.
Standing beside Ethan.
Lily holding his hand.
A family.
Everything Victoria believed already belonged to her.
Her breathing became uneven.
"No."
She grabbed the dress.
"No!"
With one violent pull, the delicate lace ripped from shoulder to waist.
The sound echoed through the empty room.
She tore again.
And again.
Silk split beneath her hands.
Pearls scattered across the hardwood floor.
Within seconds, the masterpiece had become nothing more than expensive scraps of fabric.
Victoria stared at the destruction.
Then she began to cry.
Not graceful tears.
Not elegant ones.
Raw.
Angry.
Terrified.
A quiet knock interrupted her breakdown.
"Victoria?"
Her mother opened the door.
"Oh my God..."
She looked from her daughter to the ruined wedding dress.
"What happened?"
Victoria whispered the words like a confession.
"I think I'm losing him."
Meanwhile, Rosa had made a decision.
She folded her housekeeping uniform carefully and placed it inside an envelope.
She couldn't stay.
Even if Ethan truly was Lily's father, she couldn't continue cleaning his home while everyone whispered behind her back.
She drove to the estate just before sunset.
James opened the front gate.
"Good evening, Miss Martinez."
She smiled sadly.
"I need to speak with Mr. Caldwell."
"He isn't home."
"Then would you give this to him?"
James accepted the envelope.
"What is it?"
"My resignation."
He frowned.
"Are you sure?"
"I have to think about my daughter."
James nodded.
"I understand."
She turned to leave.
Then stopped.
"James?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For always treating Lily like she belonged here."
The old security chief smiled gently.
"Maybe she always did."
Ethan returned an hour later.
James handed him the envelope without a word.
He opened it.
A single page.
Effective immediately, I resign from my position.
Thank you for treating us with kindness.
Rosa Martinez.
His jaw tightened.
Without thinking, he grabbed his car keys.
Twenty minutes later, he stood outside Rosa's duplex.
She opened the door before he could knock.
"I thought you might come."
He held up the resignation letter.
"Why?"
"I can't work for you anymore."
"You don't work for me."
She looked confused.
"I work at your house."
"No."
Ethan met her eyes.
"You work with me."
She almost laughed.
"There's a difference."
"There shouldn't be."
"There always has been."
Neither spoke for a moment.
Finally, Rosa sighed.
"I don't want Lily growing up surrounded by gossip."
"I don't care about gossip."
"I do."
"Then let me fix it."
"You can't."
"I have to try."
Before Rosa could answer, a tiny voice echoed from the hallway.
"Mama?"
Lily padded into the living room wearing dinosaur pajamas and holding Button by one floppy ear.
She smiled sleepily.
"Ethan!"
He crouched to her height.
"Hi."
She climbed into his lap as naturally as breathing.
"Did you come read stories?"
He looked at Rosa.
"I... wasn't planning to."
Lily pouted.
"You can."
Rosa shook her head with an exhausted smile.
"I think she's decided for us."
Twenty minutes later, Ethan found himself sitting on an old sofa with Lily tucked against his side.
The book was about a little rabbit searching for home.
Halfway through, Lily interrupted.
"Can I ask something?"
"Of course."
She studied him seriously.
"Are you the man Mama cries about?"
The room became completely still.
Rosa closed her eyes.
She had never cried in front of Lily.
At least...
She hadn't thought she had.
Ethan answered softly.
"I hope not."
Lily frowned.
"But sometimes she looks at your picture."
Rosa covered her face.
"I'm sorry..."
Ethan looked at her across the room.
"No."
His voice was gentle.
"You never have to apologize for remembering."
Their eyes met.
Years of silence passed between them.
Years that suddenly felt painfully unnecessary.
As Ethan prepared to leave, his phone vibrated.
Michael Grant.
"The final DNA report is ready."
Ethan's heartbeat stopped.
"Don't tell me over the phone."
"I wasn't going to."
"When?"
"I'm bringing it to your office first thing tomorrow morning."
After hanging up, Ethan slipped the phone into his pocket.
Tomorrow.
By this time tomorrow...
There would be no more questions.
Only answers.
As he looked back one last time, Lily waved from the doorway.
"Good night!"
He smiled.
"Good night, sweetheart."
The word escaped before he could stop it.
Sweetheart.
Lily grinned as though it had always belonged to her.
Rosa noticed.
So did Ethan.
Neither of them said a word.
But somewhere deep inside both their hearts...
May you like
Hope quietly began to return.
