Chapter 1 - The Hand in Midair

The Grand Aurelia Palace had hosted presidents, movie stars, billionaires, and royal families.
But on the night of the Blackwood Children’s Foundation Gala, the most powerful person in the ballroom was wearing a gray maid’s uniform.
Her name was Grace Miller.
And nobody knew it yet.
Grace was pushing a service cart past the marble corridor outside the main ballroom when she heard a woman shouting.
“Move that chair before I have security throw both of you outside.”
Grace stopped.
Near the tall gold doors sat an elderly woman in a wheelchair.
Her silver hair was neatly pinned behind her ears.
She wore a simple navy dress and an old pearl necklace.
Standing over her was Vanessa Sinclair, one of Manhattan’s most photographed socialites.
Vanessa wore a crimson designer gown and enough diamonds to pay Grace’s rent for twenty years.
The old woman looked up calmly.
“I was told I could wait here.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You were told wrong.”
She grabbed the wheelchair handle.
The old woman immediately caught the armrest.
“Please don’t move me.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re blocking the entrance.”
“There is plenty of room.”
“Are you arguing with me?”
Grace stepped forward.
“Ma’am, I can move the cart instead.”
Vanessa turned.
“And who asked you?”
“No one.”
“Then keep polishing glasses.”
Grace looked at the elderly woman.
Something about her face felt familiar.
Not from television.
Not from newspapers.
From somewhere Grace couldn’t place.
Vanessa leaned closer to the woman.
“This event costs ten thousand dollars a seat.”
The elderly woman remained composed.
“I’m aware.”
“Then you should understand why people like you don’t belong near the donors.”
Grace felt her stomach tighten.
The old woman said nothing.
Vanessa mistook silence for weakness.
She reached for the wheelchair again.
The woman pushed Vanessa’s hand away.
That tiny act changed everything.
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You touched me?”
“Please leave me alone.”
Vanessa raised her hand.
Grace moved before she had time to think.
Her fingers closed around Vanessa’s wrist inches from the elderly woman’s face.
The corridor went silent.
Vanessa stared at Grace in disbelief.
Grace slowly lowered Vanessa’s hand.
“You’re not going to hit her.”
Vanessa tried pulling free.
Grace didn’t let go.
“Release me.”
“Step away from her first.”
Vanessa’s cheeks turned red.
“Do you have any idea who I am?”
“Yes.”
“Then you know I can have you fired before dessert.”
Grace finally released her.
Vanessa staggered backward.
Several guests had stopped near the ballroom entrance.
Phones were already appearing.
Vanessa noticed.
Her humiliation immediately became rage.
She pointed at Grace.
“Security.”
Nobody moved.
Vanessa screamed louder.
“SECURITY.”
Two guards approached from the ballroom.
Vanessa smiled.
“Get this maid out of my sight.”
Grace reached for her employee badge.
She knew exactly what was coming.
She needed this job.
Her mother’s medical bills were overdue.
Her younger brother still depended on her.
Losing tonight’s position could mean losing their apartment next month.
But Grace looked at the old woman again.
She couldn’t regret what she had done.
One guard reached toward her.
Then a man’s voice came from behind Vanessa.
“Take your hand off my employee.”
Every head turned.
A tall man in a black tuxedo stood beneath the chandelier.
Adrian Blackwood.
Owner of the Grand Aurelia Palace.
Chairman of Blackwood Holdings.
And the billionaire whose family name was written across every invitation in the building.
Vanessa’s anger disappeared instantly.
“Adrian.”
She smiled nervously.
“You have no idea what happened.”
Adrian didn’t look at her.
He walked directly past Vanessa.
Then he crouched beside the elderly woman’s wheelchair.
His entire expression changed.
“Mom.”
Grace stopped breathing.
Adrian touched the woman’s hand.
“Are you hurt?”
The elderly woman shook her head.
“I’m fine.”
Adrian slowly stood.
He looked at Vanessa.
For the first time that evening, Vanessa Sinclair seemed unable to speak.
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You were about to hit my mother.”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Grace thought the confrontation was over.
Then Eleanor Blackwood reached for her son’s sleeve.
“Adrian.”
He looked down.
Eleanor’s eyes were no longer on Vanessa.
They were on Grace.
“Before you remove anyone from this palace.”
She paused.
“You need to ask that young woman her last name.”
Grace felt cold.
Adrian turned toward her.
“What is your last name?”
Grace swallowed.
“Miller.”
Eleanor stared at her.
Then she whispered a name Grace had not heard since her father died.
“No.”
Her fingers began trembling.
“It can’t be.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“What is it?”
Eleanor looked directly into Grace’s eyes.
“You’re Thomas Miller’s daughter.”
Grace froze.
May you like
Because nobody in that room was supposed to know her father.
And Thomas Miller had died eighteen years ago carrying a secret from the Blackwood Palace to his grave.
