Chapter 8 - The Man Who Never Left

Martin Vale disappeared from the gala.

His car remained in the garage.

His coat remained backstage.

But the man himself vanished.

By morning, Adrian’s security team found a hidden stairwell connecting the ballroom to an underground parking tunnel.

Grace understood.

Martin had known the palace better than almost anyone.

He had spent nineteen years making sure the past stayed buried.

Thomas’s recording continued.

“He knows I copied the ledgers.”

Then a horn blared.

Thomas cursed.

“I’m being followed.”

Helen had listened to those thirty-seven seconds hundreds of times.

The final sound was Thomas saying one last sentence.

“Tell Grace I’m sorry.”

Then silence.

Grace sat motionless.

Adrian looked devastated.

“My family covered this up.”

Helen looked at him.

“Your father did.”

“And my mother?”

“She suspected.”

Grace stood.

“She had evidence.”

“Not enough.”

“She had my father’s photograph.”

“She had suspicions.”

“She had eighteen years.”

Helen flinched.

Grace immediately regretted the cruelty.

But anger had nowhere else to go.

Adrian received a call.

Martin Vale had been found.

Not arrested.

Found.

He was lying unconscious in the rear seat of a hired car near the East River.

Someone had injected him with a sedative.

The driver was gone.

When Martin woke at the hospital, he asked for Adrian.

Grace insisted on going too.

Martin looked twenty years older beneath the fluorescent lights.

He saw Grace and laughed weakly.

“Thomas’s daughter.”

“You followed my father.”

Martin closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

Grace stepped closer.

“Don’t lie.”

“I followed him.”

“Why?”

“Charles ordered me to recover the documents.”

“And the brakes?”

Martin opened his eyes.

“I didn’t touch them.”

“Who did?”

“I don’t know.”

Grace grabbed the bedrail.

“My father died.”

Martin looked toward Adrian.

“So did your father.”

Adrian stiffened.

Richard Blackwood had died seven years earlier in what everyone believed was a boating accident.

Martin smiled bitterly.

“You really think that was an accident?”

Adrian leaned over him.

“Who killed him?”

Martin began coughing.

A nurse entered.

His monitor beeped rapidly.

Martin grabbed Grace’s wrist.

His grip was surprisingly strong.

“Vanessa thinks she inherited Charles’s empire.”

Grace stared at him.

“She didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

Martin looked toward the door.

Fear flooded his face.

“She inherited his enemy.”

Suddenly every alarm on the monitor screamed.

The nurse shouted for help.

Martin convulsed.

Doctors rushed in.

Grace was pushed backward.

Martin’s eyes found hers one final time.

He mouthed two words.

“Ask Eleanor.”

Then his heart stopped.
