Chapter 14 - The Betrayal Vote

The boardroom sat fifty floors above Manhattan.

At exactly ten, every seat was filled.

Press waited downstairs.

Security surrounded the building.

Vanessa remained under investigation.

Martin was dead.

Victor was missing.

Julian sat calmly across from Adrian.

Grace entered with Helen.

Every conversation stopped.

She wore no designer dress.

No expensive jewelry.

Only a simple black suit she had bought years earlier for her father’s memorial service.

Julian smiled.

The corporate attorney began.

“Grace Miller has formally activated the Thomas Miller Trust.”

Twelve percent.

Enough to decide the vote.

The first resolution called for Adrian Blackwood’s removal.

Votes were cast.

Without Grace, the board was tied.

Everyone looked at her.

Grace stood.

“My father worked in this building.”

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

“He fixed lights.”

“Repaired wiring.”

“Entered rooms people like you rarely notice.”

“And because people ignored him, he saw things you thought nobody saw.”

Julian’s smile faded slightly.

“He found corruption.”

“He tried to expose it.”

“He died.”

Grace looked at Eleanor.

“Some people here were guilty of crimes.”

“Others were guilty of cowardice.”

Then she looked at Adrian.

“And some inherited consequences they did not create.”

Julian leaned back.

Grace continued.

“I vote to remove Adrian Blackwood.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Adrian nodded once.

The resolution passed.

Julian became acting chairman.

Applause came from several directors.

Grace sat down.

Julian smiled.

“You made the right decision.”

Grace looked at him.

“I’m not finished.”

The attorney cleared his throat.

Grace placed another document on the table.

“As a twelve-percent voting shareholder, I request an immediate second resolution.”

Julian’s smile vanished.

“On what basis?”

“Fraud.”

The doors opened.

Federal investigators entered.

Vanessa walked behind them.

Not in handcuffs.

Julian stood.

“What is this?”

Vanessa smiled coldly.

“Surprised?”

Grace had met Vanessa secretly that morning.

The syringe evidence had been compromised.

Security footage proved Vanessa had been unconscious when Martin was injected.

Charges were dropped.

More importantly, Vanessa had given investigators access to the Sinclair accounts.

The money trail led directly to Julian.

Grace looked across the table.

“You wanted everyone fighting.”

“Blackwood against Sinclair.”

“Adrian against Vanessa.”

“Eleanor against me.”

“You even used the video of your own aunt being attacked.”

Julian’s face remained calm.

“You have no proof.”

Vanessa dropped a flash drive onto the table.

“My father kept backups.”

Julian looked at it.

For the first time, fear appeared.

Then every light in the boardroom went out.

A gunshot shattered the window.

People screamed.

When emergency lights came on, Julian was gone.

And so was Helen.
