Chapter 1 – A Father's Promise

Alexander remained beside Sofia's couch for a long time, saying nothing.
His fingertips barely brushed the bruises on her arms, as though he feared even the gentlest touch might cause her more pain.
Finally, he stood.
"When did this happen?"
"After the reception," Sofia whispered.
"And Javier watched?"
She nodded.
"He stayed outside the suite."
Alexander closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, every trace of emotion had disappeared.
He wasn't calm because he had forgiven them.
He was calm because he had made a decision.
He looked at me.
"Take Sofia to the hospital."
"Document every injury."
"Every bruise."
"Every scratch."
He turned toward his longtime attorney, Daniel Brooks, who had arrived only minutes after him.
"File for an emergency protective order."
"Start divorce proceedings."
"And notify the district attorney."
Daniel hesitated.
"Tonight?"
Alexander's answer was immediate.
"They declared war tonight."
"We respond tonight."
Before leaving, he knelt beside Sofia once more.
"You don't have to be brave anymore."
"I'm your father."
"From this moment on, you won't face another second of this alone."
