Prosecutors charged Carmen and the women who had participated in the assault with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault, conspiracy, unlawful confinement, and attempted coercion.
Javier faced separate charges for aiding the scheme by knowingly allowing the assault to continue.
On the witness stand, Sofia spoke softly but clearly.
She described every slap.
Every threat.
Every moment she believed she might never leave that hotel room alive.
When asked why she escaped instead of signing the papers, she answered without hesitation.
"My father taught me that a home is earned."
"It is never surrendered out of fear."
The courtroom remained silent.

He simply sat in the front row beside me, holding Sofia's hand whenever she looked toward him.
When the verdict was announced, the jury found every defendant guilty.
Carmen stared at Alexander as deputies placed handcuffs around her wrists.
