Trump Issues Stark Warning to NYC Mayor-Elect Mamdani: “He Could Face Arrest”

WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday criticized recent comments made by New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, describing the progressive leader’s rhetoric as “dangerous” and suggesting that cooperation with federal authorities will be crucial if the city hopes to move forward successfully.

During an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, Trump reacted to Mamdani’s victory speech following his unexpected win in New York City’s mayoral race. The 34-year-old politician delivered a strongly worded message to supporters in which he sharply criticized Trump and encouraged political mobilization against him.

“I think it’s a very dangerous thing for him to say,” Trump told Baier. “If he wants to succeed as mayor, he has to show some respect toward Washington. Without that cooperation, it’s going to be very difficult.”

Trump also clarified that his primary concern was the future of the city itself rather than the political success of Mamdani.

“I want New York City to succeed,” Trump said. “My focus is on the city, not necessarily on helping him succeed.”

Mamdani, a democratic socialist and rising figure among progressive Democrats, secured a surprise victory over former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, whose campaign had been weighed down by past controversies and investigations. Cuomo had previously received Trump’s endorsement during the race.

In his election night speech, Mamdani openly criticized Trump, describing him as a leader who had damaged the country and calling on supporters to organize politically to prevent a potential return to power.

“We will stop the next Trump by changing the conditions that allowed him to rise in the first place,” Mamdani told cheering supporters after the results were announced.

Trump responded by characterizing the speech as overly confrontational.

“It sounded like a very angry speech, especially directed at me,” Trump said. “If he wants to work with Washington, he should take a more constructive approach. I’m in a position where many important decisions affecting the city pass through the federal government.”

Despite the criticism, Trump said he still hopes New York City will thrive under its next mayor, noting his personal and professional history with the city.

“I love New York,” Trump said. “I grew up there, I built businesses there, and I want the city to do well.”

Mamdani’s victory has attracted national attention for several reasons. Supporters note that he is expected to become the first Muslim and South Asian mayor in New York City’s history, as well as the youngest mayor elected in more than a century.
