Chapter 1: Lock the Doors

Chapter 1: Lock the Doors
“Lock the doors.”
Alessandro Moretti did not raise his voice.
He never had to.
Within seconds, the massive bronze doors of the Moretti mansion swung shut with a heavy metallic groan. Four security guards in tailored black suits stepped into position, each discreetly touching the earpiece hidden beneath their collars.
The laughter disappeared.
The orchestra lowered their instruments.
Even the rain outside seemed quieter.
Three hundred guests stood frozen beneath twelve crystal chandeliers, uncertain whether they were witnessing an engagement celebration or the beginning of a trial.
Vanessa Cole's smile remained perfectly in place.
But only from a distance.
Standing only a few feet away, Amelia Carter saw something no one else did.
Vanessa's fingers trembled.
Not with emotion.
With panic.
"Alessandro..."
She reached for his arm.
"This is ridiculous. A frightened little girl said something innocent."
He didn't look at her.
Instead, his eyes remained on Emma.
The three-year-old clung to Amelia's skirt, her flushed cheeks still pink from fever.
She peeked nervously toward the tall man kneeling before her.
Alessandro's expression softened.
"Sweetheart," he asked gently.
"Can you show me which closet?"
Emma blinked.
"The pretty lady's room."
Vanessa interrupted immediately.
"This has gone far enough."
One of the senators cleared his throat.
"Mr. Moretti... perhaps this conversation could wait until tomorrow."
A billionaire investor nodded.
"Children imagine things."
"Exactly," another guest added.
"No reason to embarrass Miss Cole."
No one wanted scandal.
Not inside the house of the most powerful family on the East Coast.
But Alessandro slowly stood.
His dark eyes swept across the ballroom.
"If a child tells the truth..."
His voice was calm.
"...and every adult asks her to lie..."
He paused.
"...then the child is not the problem."
No one answered.
Amelia wished the marble floor would swallow her whole.
Every pair of eyes had settled on her.
The maid.
The widow.
The woman whose cleaning uniform was hidden beneath a borrowed navy cardigan.
She held Emma tighter.
"Mr. Moretti..."
"I'm sorry."
"I never intended—"
"You answered my question."
He interrupted quietly.
"I appreciate honesty."
The words stunned her more than anger would have.
Honesty.
Nobody had thanked Amelia for honesty since Daniel died.
Daniel.
The memory struck her without warning.
Rain.
Police lights.
Yellow caution tape.
A construction foreman refusing to meet her eyes.
"We're very sorry."
"It was an accident."
Everyone repeated that word.
Accident.
Daniel had inspected unsafe scaffolding for the city.
Two days before his death he had told Amelia,
"If anything happens to me..."
"...don't believe them."
Then a steel beam had supposedly fallen.
No witnesses.
No investigation.
Case closed.
Emma tugged Amelia's sleeve.
"Mama?"
"I'm sleepy."
Her tiny forehead burned beneath Amelia's hand.
The fever had grown worse.
She should have been home in bed.
Instead she stood inside the richest mansion in New York surrounded by judges, politicians, CEOs, and men whose smiles never reached their eyes.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"This woman has invaded my privacy."
She pointed directly at Amelia.
"Search her bag."
Gasps spread across the ballroom.
Amelia instinctively tightened her grip on the faded canvas tote hanging from her shoulder.
Inside were only ordinary things.
Emma's medicine.
A juice box.
A stuffed rabbit missing one button eye.
A spare sweater.
Nothing more.
Yet the accusation still hurt.
Because poor people were always expected to prove they weren't thieves.
Alessandro glanced toward his head of security.
"Marco."
A broad-shouldered man stepped forward instantly.
"Yes, sir."
"Search every room on the east wing."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Alessandro, honestly—"
"The closets first."
Her smile disappeared.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Amelia saw it.
So did Alessandro.
Across the ballroom, whispers spread like wildfire.
"Do you think it's true?"
"No."
"Impossible."
"Why would she fake a pregnancy?"
"The Moretti inheritance..."
That sentence never finished.
Everyone understood the answer.
Alessandro Moretti controlled billions of dollars.
Old family trusts.
Shipping companies.
Luxury hotels.
Private ports.
Investment firms.
Most of those assets would automatically pass to his first biological child.
Not to cousins.
Not to board members.
Not even to his future wife.
Only to an heir.
A baby changed everything.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed Alessandro's hand.
Tears filled her eyes again.
"I love you."
"You know me."
"You know I would never lie."
For the first time that evening...
He finally looked directly into her eyes.
"I hope you're telling the truth."
His answer chilled the room.
Hope.
Not belief.
Twenty minutes later...
Marco returned.
His face remained unreadable.
"We searched every closet."
Silence.
"The box is gone."
Vanessa let out a shaky laugh.
"There."
She spread her hands dramatically.
"The child imagined everything."
Several guests nodded in relief.
Someone even began clapping.
The nightmare was over.
Except...
Marco wasn't finished.
"The closet was recently emptied."
The applause stopped.
"There are fresh drag marks on the hardwood floor."
"Dust outlines indicate a large storage box was removed."
"Within the last hour."
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
Alessandro slowly turned toward her.
"When did you leave your suite tonight?"
She hesitated.
"I..."
"Around seven."
Marco checked his tablet.
"Security cameras show Miss Cole entering her suite at 8:42 p.m."
"She exited alone at 8:49."
"Seven minutes."
Vanessa swallowed.
"I changed dresses."
Marco looked up.
"You entered wearing the same white gown you're wearing now."
The ballroom exploded into whispers.
Emma suddenly pointed toward the grand staircase.
"The old man."
Everyone looked.
An elderly butler stood frozen halfway down the stairs carrying a silver serving tray.
Emma smiled.
"He helped carry the flower box."
The butler nearly dropped the tray.
Every eye in the mansion turned toward him.
A bead of sweat rolled slowly down his temple.
Alessandro's voice became colder than the storm outside.
"Thomas."
The old butler looked ready to collapse.
"Come here."
Thomas took one trembling step forward.
Then another.
His hands shook so violently that a crystal glass slid from the tray and shattered across the marble floor.
"I..."
"I can explain..."
The entire ballroom fell silent.
May you like
Because everyone suddenly realized...
The little girl hadn't been the only witness.
