Chapter 12 - The Red Hallway

Grant had imagined confronting Harrow many times over the previous two days.
None of those imagined scenes involved Noah in his arms.
None involved smoke.
None involved Adrian holding a gun.
Harrow looked almost calm.
“Grant.”
Grant held Noah tighter.
“Stay away from him.”
Noah woke.
His eyes opened slowly.
Then he saw Harrow.
His body stiffened.
“Steve.”
Grant felt rage explode inside him.
Harrow smiled faintly.
“Hello, Noah.”
Noah buried his face against Grant.
Tessa moved closer to them.
Adrian kept the gun steady.
“We’re leaving.”
Grant stared at Harrow.
“You killed Elise.”
Harrow’s expression did not change.
“That is an emotional interpretation.”
“I heard you.”
“Recordings can be misleading.”
“You concealed her aneurysm.”
“I was not her primary physician.”
“You told Adrian to use the spray.”
Harrow’s jaw tightened.
For the first time, Grant saw irritation.
Not guilt.
Irritation at being understood.
Adrian gestured with the gun.
“Enough.”
Harrow looked at Tessa.
“You always were inconvenient.”
Tessa stared.
“You remember me.”
“Of course.”
“You fired me.”
“You accessed files you had no right to see.”
“You murdered a patient.”
Harrow smiled.
“That word is used far too casually.”
Grant shifted Noah.
The fire alarm continued.
Sprinklers had not activated.
Grant realized something.
The smoke might be artificial.
A diversion.
Daniel had disappeared toward the other hallway.
Grant hoped he was contacting police.
Harrow stepped closer.
“We only need the drive.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“You think there is one copy?”
Harrow stopped.
Grant saw uncertainty.
Good.
“There are dozens.”
“That would be foolish.”
“Then I’m foolish.”
Adrian raised the weapon slightly.
“Don’t test him.”
Grant looked directly at Adrian.
“You won’t shoot while I’m holding Noah.”
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“Why?”
“Because Harrow needs him alive.”
Harrow said nothing.
Grant continued.
“And he needs me cooperative.”
Adrian glanced toward Harrow.
Tiny movement.
Grant saw the hierarchy.
Adrian took orders.
Harrow needed control.
Tessa saw it too.
She spoke.
“You’re going to kill Adrian.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
Tessa kept her eyes on Harrow.
“That is what you do.”
“You leave one person holding the blame.”
“Lauren.”
“Vivienne.”
“Elise.”
“Charles Renner.”
“Now Adrian.”
Adrian’s gun moved slightly toward Tessa.
Harrow’s face remained still.
Tessa continued.
“You think he hasn’t prepared for that?”
Adrian looked toward Harrow.
“Shut up.”
Tessa did not.
“Vivienne kept records because she knew.”
“Adrian must have too.”
Harrow finally spoke.
“She is trying to distract you.”
Tessa smiled despite the bandage on her head.
“Did he tell you about the backup, Adrian?”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What backup?”
There was no known backup.
Tessa invented it.
Grant understood immediately.
Harrow answered too quickly.
“There is no backup.”
Adrian looked at him.
“How do you know?”
Harrow’s irritation sharpened.
“Because I know.”
Adrian’s gaze changed.
Suspicion.
Years of conspiracy did not equal trust.
Grant heard movement inside the stairwell behind Harrow.
Maybe security.
Maybe police.
Harrow heard it too.
He stepped forward.
“Enough.”
“Give me Noah.”
Grant’s entire body went cold.
“No.”
“Grant.”
“You are not touching my son.”
Harrow sighed.
“You misunderstand the situation.”
“No.”
“I finally understand it perfectly.”
Grant stepped backward.
“You lost your company.”
“You blamed me.”
“You used your daughter.”
“You killed your wife.”
“You killed mine.”
“And now you want my son because you think he belongs in some experiment.”
Harrow’s calm cracked.
“My research could save millions.”
Grant stared.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The excuse.”
Harrow’s face tightened.
“You destroy what you do not understand.”
“My work identified vascular risk patterns years ahead of conventional models.”
“And how many people did you kill proving it?”
“Collateral events are not the same as murder.”
Tessa looked horrified.
Adrian muttered.
“Stephen.”
Harrow ignored him.
“Elise would have died eventually.”
Grant’s vision narrowed.
“You don’t know that.”
“She had a significant aneurysm.”
“You hid it.”
“Because her case mattered.”
“She was my wife.”
“She was data.”
Grant lunged.
Tessa grabbed him.
“Grant!”
Adrian aimed directly at him.
Noah screamed.
Grant stopped.
Harrow’s face regained control.
That single sentence had revealed everything.
Elise was data.
Noah was data.
Vivienne was a tool.
Everyone existed only inside Harrow’s system.
Then the emergency speaker crackled.
“Police.”
“Drop the weapon.”
Adrian spun.
A tactical officer appeared at the far end of the corridor.
Harrow moved instantly.
He grabbed Tessa.
A small knife appeared against her throat.
Grant froze.
Adrian swung his gun toward the officers.
“Back up!”
The corridor became chaos.
Police shouted commands.
Noah cried.
Tessa stood rigid.
Harrow dragged her backward.
“Stairwell.”
Adrian followed.
Grant remained trapped between them and police.
Harrow looked at Grant.
“Bring Noah.”
Grant stared.
“Never.”
The knife pressed harder.
Tessa winced.
Grant saw a thin line of red.
“Grant.”
Harrow smiled.
“You already let one woman die because you were too busy to listen.”
“Do you want another?”
Grant stopped breathing.
Tessa looked at him.
“No.”
Harrow tightened his grip.
Tessa shouted.
“Do not give him Noah.”
Adrian swung the gun.
“Move!”
Police could not fire cleanly.
Grant stepped toward the stairwell.
One step.
Then another.
Noah clung to him.
Tessa shook her head.
“Grant.”
“It’s okay.”
“No, it isn’t.”
Grant looked directly at her.
“Trust me.”
Harrow laughed.
“A little late for that theme.”
Grant moved closer.
Ten feet.
Eight.
Six.
Harrow reached his free hand toward Noah.
Noah began screaming.
“No!”
Grant stopped.
Harrow’s fingers stretched.
Then Tessa suddenly dropped her full weight.
Harrow’s knife jerked away from her throat.
Adrian looked toward them.
That half-second was enough.
Grant kicked the stairwell door into Adrian’s arm.
The gun fired.
The shot hit the ceiling.
Police surged forward.
Tessa twisted away.
Harrow grabbed her hair.
Grant drove his shoulder into him.
Noah was still locked against Grant’s chest.
Everything became movement.
Shouting.
Boots.
Smoke.
Harrow hit the floor.
Adrian ran down the stairs.
Two officers followed.
Grant landed hard against the wall.
Noah screamed but remained protected between Grant’s arms and chest.
Tessa crawled away.
An officer pinned Harrow.
“Hands!”
Harrow resisted.
Another officer joined.
They cuffed him.
Grant sat on the floor holding Noah.
For several seconds, he could not move.
Tessa crawled toward them.
“Is he okay?”
Grant checked Noah frantically.
No blood.
No obvious injury.
Just terror.
“He’s okay.”
Tessa collapsed beside them.
Harrow turned his head from the floor.
His glasses were broken.
Blood ran from his lip.
Yet he smiled.
Grant stared.
“What?”
Harrow whispered.
“You still don’t know.”
Grant’s skin prickled.
“Know what?”
An officer pulled Harrow upright.
Harrow looked at Noah.
Then Grant.
“Ask Elise why she chose Tessa.”
Grant froze.
Tessa stared.
“What?”
Harrow laughed.
“Ask her.”
“She’s dead.”
Harrow’s smile widened.
“Exactly.”
Police dragged him away.
Grant looked toward Tessa.
She seemed equally confused.
Then Daniel appeared from the other stairwell.
His face was pale.
“Grant.”
“What?”
Daniel looked toward Noah.
“We need to move.”
“Why?”
“Adrian got out.”
Grant stared.
“How?”
“He had a vehicle in the lower garage.”
“Police are pursuing.”
Grant cursed.
Daniel continued.
“There’s something else.”
Grant had no patience left.
“What?”
“We received the lab results on Elise’s nasal spray.”
Grant went still.
“It contained a vasoconstrictor at an extremely high concentration.”
Tessa covered her mouth.
Grant closed his eyes.
Proof.
Maybe not complete proof.
But physical evidence had survived four years.
Then Daniel added.
“They found DNA on the inside of the cap.”
Grant opened his eyes.
“Whose?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Not Elise’s.”
Grant stared.
“Vivienne?”
“No.”
“Harrow?”
“No.”
“Adrian?”
“No.”
Grant felt something cold move through him.
“Then whose?”
Daniel looked at Tessa.
Her face slowly drained of color.
May you like
“The preliminary match is Tessa.”
