Chapter 13 - The DNA on the Bottle

Tessa did not run.
Grant noticed that first.
She did not scream.
She did not invent an explanation.
She simply stared at Daniel.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel looked miserable.
“It’s preliminary.”
Tessa touched the bandage near her temple.
“I never touched Elise’s nasal spray.”
Grant watched her closely.
She looked genuinely stunned.
He no longer trusted appearances.
He hated that.
Tessa looked toward him.
“You believe me?”
Grant said nothing.
Pain crossed her face.
She nodded slowly.
“Fair.”
Grant hated that too.
Ortiz separated them immediately.
Tessa gave a formal DNA sample.
The laboratory reran testing.
Meanwhile, Harrow was booked under heavy guard.
He requested an attorney and stopped speaking.
Adrian remained missing.
Vivienne underwent emergency surgery.
She survived.
Grant sat beside Noah while Tessa was questioned elsewhere.
Noah asked.
“Where Tessa?”
“She’s talking to the police.”
“Why?”
Grant did not know how to answer.
“Because grown-ups are trying to understand what happened.”
Noah frowned.
“Tessa good.”
Grant looked at him.
“Yes.”
The answer came automatically.
Then he wondered whether it was certainty or hope.
Three hours later, the lab confirmed the match.
Tessa’s DNA was on the nasal spray cap.
Grant felt betrayed by biology itself.
Ortiz returned to the timeline.
“Could Tessa have handled the bottle at the clinic?”
Tessa insisted no.
Grant remembered she worked there.
Possible.
But the bottle had been given to Elise after one appointment.
Tessa claimed she never touched it.
Then Daniel found employment records.
Tessa had been on duty the day the spray was issued.
Her signature appeared on a medication-distribution log.
Tessa stared.
“I did not sign that.”
Grant looked at her.
“It looks like your signature.”
“I know.”
The pattern repeated.
Forged handwriting.
Altered video.
Planted jewelry.
Someone had been framing Tessa for years.
But DNA was harder.
Not impossible.
Harrow’s clinic had access to Tessa’s biological material.
Employee health screens.
Hair.
Discarded cups.
Anything.
Ortiz asked a forensic specialist.
Could DNA be deliberately transferred?
Yes.
Especially touch DNA.
The amount on the cap was tiny.
That mattered.
If Tessa had handled the bottle normally, more material might be expected.
If someone transferred trace DNA deliberately, a low-level profile made sense.
Grant felt hope return cautiously.
Then another result arrived.
A second DNA profile was on the bottle.
Partial.
Male.
It matched Stephen Harrow.
Grant stood.
Tessa exhaled sharply.
The bottle linked Harrow directly.
His defense could claim medical handling.
But combined with the recording and concealed aneurysm, the case strengthened.
Then Ortiz asked the question Harrow wanted.
“Why did Elise choose Tessa?”
Grant looked toward Tessa.
She shook her head.
“She didn’t.”
“You said you intentionally applied to work for Grant because of Elise.”
“Yes.”
“Did Elise ever ask you to?”
“No.”
Grant thought of the blue-room files.
Maybe another document existed.
Daniel searched Elise’s old email archives.
Most had been preserved.
One encrypted message appeared among deleted drafts.
Never sent.
Recipient field.
Tessa Reed.
Grant stared.
Tessa looked shocked.
“I never received anything.”
“It’s a draft.”
Daniel opened it.
Elise had written:
“Tessa, if you ever see this, I’m sorry I did not believe you sooner.”
Grant’s chest tightened.
The message continued.
“You were right about the audit.”
“Harrow is hiding something.”
“I am leaving copies where Vanessa showed me.”
“If anything happens, do not go to Grant until you know who is watching him.”
Tessa covered her mouth.
Grant read on.
“If Noah ever needs someone who knows the truth, I hope you will help him.”
Grant looked at Tessa.
She was crying openly now.
“I never saw this.”
“I believe you.”
The words came easier this time.
Elise had, in a sense, chosen Tessa.
Not as part of a conspiracy.
As a possible protector.
Harrow had known about the draft.
That was why he taunted Grant.
He hoped suspicion would fracture them.
Again.
Grant was done helping him.
Tessa wiped her face.
“She knew I was right.”
“Yes.”
“She was going to contact me.”
“Yes.”
Tessa looked devastated.
“I spent four years wondering whether I imagined everything.”
Grant sat beside her.
“You didn’t.”
Noah climbed between them.
He leaned against Tessa.
Grant did not stop him.
For the first time since the living-room attack, something felt clear.
Then Vivienne woke.
Ortiz interviewed her at the hospital under guard.
Vivienne confessed to multiple crimes.
Fraud.
Evidence tampering.
Conspiracy.
Child abuse.
She admitted helping Adrian access Grant’s systems.
She admitted forging parts of the trust paperwork.
She admitted taking Noah to Harrow’s clinic.
She admitted psychologically tormenting him.
She did not minimize it.
That surprised everyone.
“I hated him sometimes.”
Ortiz asked.
“Why?”
“Because he looked like Elise.”
“Because Grant loved him in a way he never loved me.”
“Because my father told me attachment was weakness.”
“Because I was cruel.”
Vivienne stared toward the ceiling.
“Pick whichever explanation makes you comfortable.”
Ortiz asked about the kick.
Vivienne’s eyes filled.
“There is no explanation.”
“I was angry.”
“He spilled juice.”
“I wanted him to stop crying.”
“I became my father.”
She closed her eyes.
“Then Tessa walked in.”
Ortiz asked.
“Did you intend to hit Tessa with the vase?”
“Yes.”
Grant watched from another room.
Tessa looked away.
Vivienne continued.
“I knew the camera was there.”
“I thought it was disabled.”
“Adrian told me it was.”
“Why did you try to delete footage later?”
“I didn’t.”
“Adrian already had administrator access.”
“Why run?”
“Because I knew what else the camera archive might show.”
“Not because you feared wrongful arrest?”
Vivienne gave a hollow laugh.
“No.”
“Because I was guilty.”
Ortiz asked about Elise.
Vivienne became quiet.
“I didn’t kill her.”
“Did you help?”
“Yes.”
Grant stopped breathing.
Tessa gripped the chair.
Vivienne continued.
“I gave Adrian her schedule.”
“I gave my father access to her old imaging.”
“I convinced Elise to meet me.”
“I told myself I was keeping her safe by cooperating.”
“That was a lie.”
Ortiz asked.
“Did you know the nasal spray had been altered?”
“No.”
“When did you learn?”
“After she died.”
“What did Harrow say?”
“That she forced his hand.”
Grant’s eyes burned.
Ortiz asked.
“Why did you later approach Grant?”
Vivienne stared at her.
“My father ordered me to.”
“And then?”
“I stayed.”
“Why?”
Vivienne laughed sadly.
“Money.”
“Fear.”
“Control.”
“Maybe love.”
“I don’t know anymore.”
Ortiz asked about Adrian.
Vivienne’s fear returned.
“He will not stop.”
“Harrow is arrested.”
“Adrian does not need him.”
“What does Adrian want?”
“The drive.”
“We have it.”
“No.”
Vivienne looked directly through the observation glass, as though she knew Grant was there.
“You have my copy.”
Grant stood.
Ortiz frowned.
“How many copies exist?”
“Three.”
“Where are the others?”
“My father has one.”
“Adrian has one.”
Grant’s stomach turned.
“What is on Adrian’s copy?”
“Everything needed to disappear.”
“Money.”
“Passports.”
“Leverage.”
“Names.”
Ortiz asked.
“Where will he go?”
Vivienne shook her head.
“He won’t leave yet.”
“Why?”
“He hates loose ends.”
“What loose ends?”
Vivienne looked toward the glass again.
“Tessa.”
Tessa stiffened.
“Why Tessa?”
“Because she can connect the clinic audit.”
“Noah.”
“Because he can identify Harrow.”
“Me.”
“Because I betrayed him.”
“And Grant.”
Vivienne swallowed.
“Because Adrian believes Grant has something Elise stole.”
Grant entered the room despite Ortiz’s objection.
Vivienne stared at him.
He looked at the woman he had planned to marry.
The woman who had kissed Noah goodnight.
The woman who had terrorized him after Grant left the room.
Grant felt grief.
Not for the relationship.
For the version of reality he had believed.
“What did Elise steal?”
Vivienne shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“Adrian thinks she took a ledger.”
“From where?”
“My father’s clinic.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know.”
Grant stepped closer.
“Think.”
Vivienne looked exhausted.
“Elise told me she hid something where Grant never looks.”
Grant frowned.
“That could be anywhere.”
Vivienne’s gaze softened briefly.
“She said, ‘He keeps the past but never opens it.’”
Grant froze.
Elise’s storage boxes.
He had preserved everything.
Clothes.
Books.
Letters.
Photographs.
He rarely opened them.
Adrian had searched the basement for exactly that reason.
Grant called Daniel.
“Check every Elise box.”
Security moved the remaining boxes to a secure facility.
They searched carefully.
Nothing.
Then Tessa noticed one item on the inventory.
Elise’s old recipe binder.
Grant almost laughed.
“She barely cooked.”
“Exactly.”
They opened it.
Inside the back cover was a thin cut.
A hidden compartment.
And inside was a microSD card.
Grant stared.
Elise had hidden evidence in the most ordinary object possible.
The card contained a financial ledger.
Payments from Harrow to Adrian.
Bribes.
Insurance proceeds.
Patient identifiers.
A list of targeted families.
It was enough to dismantle the entire network.
Then a final file appeared.
A photograph taken by Elise.
Adrian standing beside a dark blue sedan.
The same model she said had followed her.
The license plate was visible.
Police searched historical registration.
The car belonged to Detective Martin Shaw.
Grant felt the case tighten again.
Then Daniel looked at the current vehicle records.
His expression changed.
“That plate was reactivated.”
Grant looked up.
“Where?”
“A toll camera caught it twenty minutes ago.”
Ortiz immediately asked.
“Direction?”
Daniel stared at the map.
His face went pale.
“Toward Amelia’s house.”
Grant stopped breathing.
Noah was with Amelia.
Or he had been.
Grant grabbed his phone.
Amelia did not answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Security at her property failed to respond.
Grant looked at Noah.
Noah was now with him.
Thank God.
But Amelia was there.
So was Grant’s niece.
Grant ran toward the door.
Tessa followed.
Vivienne shouted from the hospital bed.
“Grant!”
He stopped.
She looked terrified.
“Adrian doesn’t care about Amelia.”
Grant stared.
“Then why go there?”
Vivienne whispered.
May you like
“Because he thinks Noah is still there.”
