Chapter 15 - The Insider

Backup generators activated within eight seconds.

Eight seconds was enough to change everything.

One security officer disappeared.

His name was Marcus Dean.

He had worked contract protection for Mercer Dynamics for seven months.

Daniel pulled his file.

Clean background.

Military service.

Private security.

No obvious connection to Harrow.

Then they checked deeper.

Marcus Dean did not exist before age twenty-four.

His military records were forged.

Fingerprint comparison identified him as Michael Vale.

Adrian’s younger brother.

Grant stared.

Adrian had placed family inside Grant’s security months before the living-room attack.

The tracker.

The hotel breach.

The safe-house camera.

Michael had provided access.

Police searched his room.

They found cash.

Fake identification.

A suppressed handgun.

And photographs of Noah.

Hundreds.

School.

Park.

Doctor appointments.

Sleeping in the car.

Grant had to leave the room.

Tessa followed him.

“Grant.”

He pressed both palms against the wall.

“I let these people surround him.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I hired them.”

“A company hired him.”

“My company.”

Tessa waited.

Grant turned.

“Stop protecting me from responsibility.”

“I’m not.”

“You always do.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“You tell me I couldn’t have known.”

“You tell me they manipulated me.”

“You tell me guilt isn’t useful.”

“All true.”

“But I still made choices.”

Tessa nodded.

“Yes.”

Grant looked surprised.

She continued.

“You trusted Vivienne because you wanted a life again.”

“You ignored things because acknowledging them would have destroyed that.”

“You were busy.”

“You delegated.”

“You missed signs.”

Grant looked down.

Tessa stepped closer.

“And now you know.”

“So what are you going to do with knowing?”

Grant met her eyes.

That question mattered more than blame.

He returned to Noah.

He dismissed every private contractor.

Only police-vetted personnel remained.

He stopped trying to manage the crisis like a corporate problem.

Noah received a child trauma specialist.

Tessa received her own attorney independent of Grant.

Grant arranged counseling for himself too.

Not because the danger ended.

Because survival without repair would simply become another kind of damage.

Michael Vale’s escape lasted only six hours.

Police found him at a motel.

He surrendered after a brief standoff.

Unlike Adrian, Michael talked immediately.

He was terrified of his brother.

Michael claimed Adrian planned everything after Harrow’s arrest.

Adrian had a final location.

An old Mercer Dynamics research facility abandoned after a fire years earlier.

Grant knew it.

The property sat forty miles outside the city.

Why there?

Michael answered.

“Because Harrow used it.”

Grant stared.

“For what?”

“Before Mercer bought the land.”

Daniel checked records.

The facility had belonged to Harrow Biotech before foreclosure.

Mercer Dynamics purchased the property indirectly three years later.

Grant had unknowingly acquired part of Harrow’s former infrastructure.

Michael continued.

“There are tunnels beneath it.”

“Old medical storage.”

“Adrian moved equipment there.”

Ortiz asked.

“What equipment?”

Michael looked toward Grant.

“For Noah.”

Grant’s blood went cold.

“What?”

“Harrow planned to keep him there temporarily after your accident.”

Grant stood.

“You knew?”

Michael looked ashamed.

“I thought it was kidnapping for leverage.”

“He’s a child.”

“I know.”

“You planted cameras around him.”

Michael looked down.

Grant stepped closer.

Ortiz blocked him.

“Grant.”

He stopped.

Michael continued.

“Adrian said nobody was supposed to hurt Noah.”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“People always say that right before hurting children.”

Michael flinched.

“He said Vivienne ruined everything because she lost control.”

Grant looked at him.

“She kicked my son and your brother’s problem was poor discipline?”

Michael said nothing.

Ortiz asked about Adrian’s current plan.

Michael swallowed.

“He wants Grant to come to the facility.”

“Why?”

“To trade.”

“What?”

“The ledger for Vivienne.”

Grant frowned.

“Vivienne is under police guard.”

Michael looked confused.

“No.”

Everyone became still.

“What?”

“Adrian said he had her.”

Ortiz immediately called the hospital.

The guard outside Vivienne’s room answered.

She was there.

But when the nurse entered, the patient in the bed was not Vivienne.

It was another woman.

A hospital worker.

Drugged but alive.

Vivienne was gone.

Security footage showed a wheelchair leaving through a service exit.

Pushed by a man dressed as an orderly.

Adrian.

Grant felt fury and dread.

He had somehow penetrated another secure location.

Ortiz asked Michael.

“Where will Adrian take her?”

“The facility.”

“Why keep her alive?”

Michael looked toward Grant.

“She knows the encryption code for his backup.”

Grant understood.

Adrian needed Vivienne to access money and records.

Or he intended to force Grant into exchanging the ledger.

Police prepared a raid.

Grant was ordered to stay away.

He agreed.

Then Adrian called him directly.

Video.

Vivienne sat tied to a chair.

Her face was pale.

An IV line ran into her arm.

Adrian stood behind her.

“Hello, Grant.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Let her go.”

Vivienne gave him a weak look.

Adrian smiled.

“Interesting.”

“You hate her.”

“Yet you still say that.”

“I want her alive to stand trial.”

Vivienne almost smiled.

Adrian laughed.

“Always practical.”

Grant looked at the background.

Concrete wall.

Industrial lighting.

Possibly the research facility.

“What do you want?”

“The ledger Elise stole.”

“Police have copies.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“I want the original.”

“Why?”

Adrian’s smile faded.

“Because Harrow wrote something inside it.”

Grant looked toward Daniel.

The physical ledger they found was digital.

Maybe Adrian meant another object.

“What?”

“You’ll find out when you bring it.”

“I don’t have it.”

Adrian struck Vivienne across the back of the chair.

She gasped.

Grant’s expression changed.

“Do that again and there will be no deal.”

Adrian leaned closer to the camera.

“You’re not in control.”

Grant stared.

“You called me.”

Adrian paused.

Grant continued.

“You need something from me.”

“That means you don’t have control either.”

For the first time, Adrian looked angry.

Good.

Grant continued.

“Tell me what ledger.”

“Elise’s red book.”

Grant froze.

He remembered a small red notebook Elise used during pregnancy.

She wrote baby names in it.

Doctor questions.

Shopping lists.

Grant had not seen it since her death.

Adrian saw his expression.

“You know.”

Grant said nothing.

“Bring it.”

“Where?”

“I’ll send instructions.”

The call ended.

Tessa looked at Grant.

“Red notebook?”

“Elise had one.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel searched inventory.

Not in storage.

Not in the blue room.

Then Grant remembered Noah’s baby box.

Elise created it before his birth.

Hospital bracelet.

First photograph.

Ultrasound printouts.

A red notebook.

Grant felt his chest tighten.

The box was in a bank vault.

Grant retrieved it under police supervision.

The notebook appeared ordinary.

Baby names.

Noah’s heartbeat.

Notes to Grant.

Then halfway through, entries changed.

Elise began documenting Harrow.

Names.

Dates.

Plate numbers.

A handwritten code.

On the back cover was a list of account numbers.

And one sentence.

VANESSA DOESN’T KNOW ADRIAN IS HER BROTHER.

Grant stared.

“What?”

Daniel looked equally shocked.

They checked birth records.

Stephen Harrow had fathered a son two years before Vivienne’s birth.

The mother was not Lauren.

That son’s birth name.

Adrian Cole Harrow.

Grant felt the entire structure shift.

Adrian Vale was not merely Harrow’s associate.

He was Vivienne’s half-brother.

Did she know?

Elise believed she did not.

Tessa whispered.

“Harrow used both of his children.”

Grant looked at the notebook.

Adrian had spent his life serving the father who never publicly acknowledged him.

Vivienne had spent hers trying and failing to escape the father who controlled her.

They were siblings without knowing.

Or Vivienne only learned later.

The notebook included one more devastating note.

“Adrian thinks Stephen will leave him everything.”

“But Stephen’s trust leaves all assets to Victoria.”

Grant looked at Daniel.

Adrian wanted the notebook because it proved Harrow had betrayed him too.

If Adrian learned the truth while holding Vivienne hostage, the situation could become even more dangerous.

Then Adrian sent coordinates.

The abandoned facility.

And one instruction.

COME ALONE.

Grant looked at Ortiz.

She immediately said.

“No.”

Grant stared at the red notebook.

Then at Vivienne’s frozen image on the phone.

“No.”

Ortiz looked surprised.

Grant continued.

“I’m not going alone.”

For the first time, he had learned something.

Secrecy had killed Elise.

Isolation had empowered Harrow.

Grant would not repeat the pattern.

They would go together.

May you like

And Adrian would think he was still controlling the game until the moment he discovered he was not.
