Chapter 11 - THE INHERITANCE NOBODY UNDERSTOOD

At first, I thought Derek was lying.
Then Maya checked.
Twenty-seven years earlier, my grandfather had invested in the original Wexler hotel business.
He had saved Derek’s grandfather from bankruptcy.
In exchange, he received a dormant conversion right.
If the company defaulted under specific conditions, a Bennett trust could convert debt into controlling equity.
The contract had been renewed twice.
Then forgotten by almost everyone.
Almost.
Brenda had known.
That explained everything.
She hadn’t wanted Derek to marry a wealthy woman.
She wanted him to marry the beneficiary standing between her family and losing control.
Me.
The discovery made Derek’s behavior even uglier.
He had known about my inheritance.
But apparently, he hadn’t known the entire structure.
Brenda had manipulated her own son too.
It didn’t excuse him.
He had still thrown the rag.
He had still forged my signature.
He had still locked the door.
But now I understood why Brenda had been desperate to establish dominance immediately.
If I discovered what I controlled before she controlled me, her plan collapsed.
At midnight, my father arrived.
I had avoided calling my parents because I knew what my father would do.
He would blame himself.
He did.
“I should have told you about the Wexler agreement.”
“You didn’t know I was marrying into that Wexler family.”
“I should have checked.”
“Dad.”
His eyes were wet.
“I watched you marry him yesterday.”
“So did I.”
He looked toward Maya.
“What happens now?”
I answered before she could.
“We protect the employees.”
“Then we remove the people who did this.”
My father looked at me.
Not with pity.
With respect.
That mattered more.
The next morning, Northstar’s board met in emergency session.
I disclosed my personal conflict and temporarily recused myself from parts of the vote.
The independent directors approved forensic review and temporary restrictions on Wexler family withdrawals.
At 10:03 a.m., every Wexler family corporate card stopped working.
At 10:11, Brenda attempted to charge $18,600 at a luxury jewelry store.
Declined.
At 10:24, Derek tried transferring $300,000 from a hotel reserve account.
Blocked.
At 10:39, I received his message.
YOU’RE TRYING TO DESTROY US.
I replied for the first time.
NO.
I’M STOPPING YOU FROM DESTROYING EVERYONE ELSE.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then Derek sent a photograph.
My stomach dropped.
It showed my parents’ house.
Taken from across the street.
Beneath it were five words.
May you like
COME HOME.
WE NEED TO TALK.
