Chapter 1 - THE VIDEO THEY NEVER KNEW EXISTED

I stood alone in my friend’s hallway with the lights turned low and my phone trembling in my hand.

Then I pressed play.

The video began thirty-seven seconds before my mother-in-law hit my daughter.

My husband’s cousin had been filming the candles, so the camera was pointed directly toward our side of the banquet table.

I watched my mother-in-law lean toward my two-year-old daughter and pull the little plate away from her.

My daughter reached for a strawberry.

My mother-in-law slapped her fingers.

“Stop being greedy.”

My husband was sitting three feet away.

He looked directly at them.

He did nothing.

Then my mother-in-law turned toward one of her sisters.

“She eats exactly like her mother.”

Several people laughed.

My jaw tightened.

I had not heard that part at the banquet because two waiters had been moving chairs behind me.

The video continued.

My daughter reached for me.

My mother-in-law caught her wrist and pulled her back.

My husband finally spoke.

“Mom, just leave her alone.”

But his voice was quiet.

Almost apologetic.

His mother stared at him.

“Are you correcting me?”

He immediately looked down.

That was the moment everything changed.

She realized he would not stop her.

She turned back toward my daughter.

My little girl began squirming.

Then came the sentence I remembered clearly.

“You useless piece of trash, this girl has defective genetics.”

The slap followed.

The camera jerked because my husband’s cousin gasped.

Then I came across the table.

The video showed everything.

My hand hitting my husband.

His glasses flying into the stew.

My mother-in-law reaching toward me.

Me shoving her backward into the birthday cake.

Guests screaming.

Chairs scraping.

My daughter crying.

But the recording did not stop when I left.

That was the part I had never seen.

My mother-in-law climbed out of the ruined cake and screamed, “Call the police.”

My husband wiped broth from his face.

Then his cousin’s voice came from behind the camera.

“What about the baby?”

My husband turned toward her.

“What?”

“Your daughter.”

His answer made my stomach turn cold.

“She’s with her mother.”

His cousin said, “Your mother hit her.”

My husband looked around the room.

Then he lowered his voice.

“We need everyone here to remember what actually happened.”

Nobody moved.

He continued.

“My wife attacked my mother for no reason.”

His cousin said, “I recorded it.”

My husband’s face changed.

The screen went black.

I stood frozen in the hallway.

A new message appeared.

His cousin had sent another video.

Underneath it, she wrote four words.

“There is more.”

May you like

I opened the second recording.

And heard my husband begin telling thirty people exactly how he planned to destroy me.
