Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE LAWN

Ethan’s champagne flute slipped from his fingers.

It struck the stone patio and shattered.

For one second, nobody moved.

My son stared at me as if his mind refused to accept what his eyes were showing him.

Then he crossed the lawn.

Fast.

“Mom?”

The laughter died instantly.

Vanessa slowly lowered the garden hose.

I remained on one knee in the soaked grass.

Water dripped from my silver hair and ran down the sleeves of my secondhand shirt.

Ethan stopped in front of me.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Mom, what happened?”

Vanessa’s champagne glass tilted in her hand.

“Mom?”

The word passed through the guests like electricity.

Patricia Mitchell looked at her daughter.

George Mitchell finally lifted his eyes from his phone.

I reached into my grocery tote and removed the water-resistant sleeve.

My phone was still recording.

The red light was still blinking.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

Then at the hose.

Then back at me.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Ethan, sweetheart, this is obviously some misunderstanding.”

I stood slowly.

The young server who had tried to help me stepped forward again.

This time Vanessa didn’t threaten him.

He placed the folded napkin into my hand.

“Thank you,” I said.

Ethan took off his suit jacket and tried to put it around my shoulders.

I stopped him.

“No.”

His eyes widened.

“I want everyone to see exactly how I looked when you found me.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Mrs. Carter, I had no idea you were Ethan’s mother.”

“That is precisely the point.”

Nobody spoke.

I turned toward the thirty guests who had watched Vanessa spray me with freezing water.

Several people suddenly found the grass fascinating.

The man who had recorded me lowered his phone.

I looked at Vanessa.

“When you thought I was poor, you believed cruelty was acceptable.”

She opened her mouth.

I raised one hand.

“When you believed I had no connections, you threatened a server for trying to help me.”

Patricia rushed forward.

“Please, this has gotten completely out of control.”

I looked at her.

“You told security to remove me because I would ruin the photographs.”

Patricia froze.

George stepped forward with the calm expression of a man accustomed to negotiating his way out of uncomfortable situations.

“Mrs. Carter, emotions were high.”

“No.”

My voice remained quiet.

“Your daughter was holding a champagne glass in one hand and a hose in the other.”

I looked toward the mansion.

“Her emotions appeared perfectly organized.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Vanessa, tell me she didn’t know who Mom was.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“That’s what I’m trying to explain.”

“No.”

Ethan pointed toward me.

“Tell me you would have stopped if she had been anyone else.”

Vanessa said nothing.

That silence answered him.

I lifted my phone.

“I came here today because I needed to know who you were when you believed nobody important was watching.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.

“You recorded me?”

“Every second.”

George’s face hardened.

“You secretly recorded a private gathering?”

I smiled.

“You should worry less about the camera.”

May you like

I looked directly at Vanessa.

“And more about what you said while it was running.”
