Chapter 1 - THE PEOPLE AT THE DOOR

Elena had expected anger when she called her father.

She had not expected the front doors of the Vance estate to open less than three minutes later.

Two uniformed police officers entered first.

Behind them came Arthur Vance, Julian’s grandfather and the man whose name was engraved on the brass plaque outside the family foundation.

Beside Arthur walked a silver-haired man wearing a dark charcoal suit.

Thomas Sterling.

Elena’s father.

Every person in the drawing room went silent.

Thomas crossed the marble floor without looking at Victoria, Eleanor, or even Julian.

His eyes went directly to Elena.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Thomas studied her face.

“Did anyone touch you?”

Elena hesitated.

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

“This is a ridiculous misunderstanding.”

Thomas turned toward her.

The coldness in his expression stopped Eleanor in place.

“I was not speaking to you.”

Victoria folded her arms.

“You cannot just walk into our home and threaten us.”

Arthur Vance gave a humorless laugh.

“Actually, Victoria, Thomas did not threaten anyone.”

Arthur lifted the tablet he was carrying.

“And unfortunately for you, neither did the cameras.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Elena saw it.

Fear.

Julian saw it too.

“What cameras?”

Arthur looked at his grandson.

“The cameras you apparently forgot were installed after the insurance inspection last month.”

Eleanor went pale.

Victoria recovered quickly.

“So what?”

Arthur tapped the screen.

“So the necklace did not disappear.”

He looked directly at Victoria.

“It was moved.”

Nobody spoke.

Elena felt Julian turn toward his sister.

Victoria shook her head.

“That is impossible.”

Arthur handed the tablet to one of the officers.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“What is impossible is explaining why the footage shows you entering Elena’s bedroom twenty-three minutes before you announced that your mother’s necklace was missing.”

Victoria’s face drained of color.

Julian stared at her.

“Victoria?”

She pointed at Elena.

“She told me to go upstairs.”

Elena almost laughed.

“I was downstairs with twelve witnesses.”

Thomas finally stepped beside his daughter.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not need to.

“My daughter has spent two years protecting your family from knowing who she is.”

Julian looked at Elena.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas answered for her.

“It means Elena did not marry into money.”

He paused.

May you like

“She married beneath it.”

And for the first time that night, Julian Vance looked truly frightened.
