Chapter 1 - The Ambulance Doors

The ambulance doors were still open when Sarah and Felix reached the emergency entrance at Mount Grace Children’s Hospital.
Sarah saw Lily first.
Her six-year-old daughter looked impossibly small beneath the white hospital blanket.
An oxygen mask covered half her face.
Her eyes were open, but they were frightened and glassy.
“Mommy.”
The word was barely audible.
Sarah ran forward.
“I’m here, baby.”
A paramedic stopped her long enough to move the stretcher through the automatic doors.
“She had a severe respiratory reaction at school.”
“Do you know what caused it?”
“We don’t yet.”
Felix followed three steps behind Sarah.
He had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking.
He had faced hostile investors, lawsuits, tabloid scandals, and his mother’s fury.
None of it had prepared him for the sight of Lily struggling to breathe.
A physician met them inside.
“Family only.”
Sarah immediately stepped forward.
“I’m her mother.”
Felix stopped.
For the first time since leaving the boardroom, he seemed uncertain.
Sarah looked back at him.
“Come.”
The single word surprised both of them.
Felix entered the treatment room.
Nurses moved quickly around Lily.
Monitors began sounding.
A respiratory therapist adjusted the mask.
Sarah stood near Lily’s head and whispered the same sentence over and over.
“Mommy is here.”
Felix stayed near the wall.
He felt useless.
Then Lily turned her face slightly.
Her hazel eyes found him.
“You’re the restaurant man.”
Felix almost smiled.
“Yes.”
“The one who closed the big restaurant.”
“Yes.”
“Because Mommy was sad?”
Felix looked at Sarah.
Sarah’s face tightened.
“Because something wrong happened to your mother a long time ago.”
Lily studied him through the mask.
Then her breathing suddenly became faster.
The monitor changed rhythm.
“Mom.”
Sarah immediately leaned down.
“What is it?”
“My chest.”
A nurse called for the physician.
Felix stepped backward as three people moved around the bed.
The doctor checked Lily’s chart.
“What did she eat this morning?”
Sarah shook her head.
“She ate breakfast at home.”
The school nurse, who had arrived behind the ambulance, entered carrying Lily’s pink backpack.
“There was a hospitality event at school.”
Sarah turned.
“What hospitality event?”
“A donor breakfast.”
The nurse hesitated.
“It was catered.”
Felix already knew the answer before she finished.
“By whom?”
The nurse looked at the logo printed on a folded paper inside Lily’s backpack.
Her expression changed.
“Kingsley Hospitality.”
Silence struck Felix harder than any accusation.
Sarah slowly turned toward him.
“Your company fed my daughter something that nearly stopped her breathing.”
Felix stared at the logo.
Then at Lily.
Then back at the logo.
His phone began ringing.
CELESTE ARDEN appeared across the screen.
Felix declined the call.
Thirty seconds later, a text appeared.
Come back before you destroy everything.
Felix read it once.
Then deleted it.
He looked at Sarah.
“Tell me everything Lily cannot eat.”
Sarah’s eyes hardened.
“Why?”
“Because I’m going to find out exactly what happened.”
Outside the room, Felix called the corporate kitchen director.
His voice was quiet.
That made it more frightening.
“Freeze every catering record from St. Catherine’s Academy.”
The director hesitated.
“Mr. Kingsley, I was told those files were already removed.”
Felix’s blood turned cold.
“Removed by whom?”
There was a long silence.
Then the director answered.
“Executive authorization.”
“Whose?”
Another pause.
“Celeste Arden.”
Felix looked through the glass at Lily.
May you like
And for the first time that morning, the emergency no longer felt accidental.
