Chapter 9 - The Account No One Controlled

Felix had spent twenty years building wealth inside the Kingsley system.

But not all of it belonged to the company.

At eighteen, his grandfather had established a personal trust.

Felix had rarely touched it.

By noon, he liquidated enough assets to cover Lily’s projected medical care for years.

Sarah stared at the number on the guarantee letter.

“This is too much.”

“No.”

“It is.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“You’ve known for two days.”

“I’ve missed six years.”

“You cannot buy those years back.”

Felix looked at her.

“I know.”

His voice softened.

“That isn’t what I’m trying to do.”

Sarah sat down.

For the first time, she saw the difference.

He was not trying to purchase forgiveness.

He was trying to remove anyone else’s ability to control Lily’s care.

Felix signed the final guarantee.

“Celeste can freeze company support.”

“She cannot touch this.”

Sarah stared at the document.

“What happens to Kingsley Hospitality now?”

“I don’t know.”

“That doesn’t scare you?”

“Yes.”

Felix looked toward Lily’s room.

“Just not as much as losing her.”

Before Sarah could answer, Mateo arrived with another envelope.

“I found someone.”

Felix looked up.

“Who?”

“The pastry supervisor who worked the St. Catherine’s order.”

A young woman named Elena Ruiz entered behind him.

She looked terrified.

“I don’t want to lose my job.”

Felix nodded.

“You may already have lost it because of me.”

Elena swallowed.

“Ms. Arden’s office called the kitchen.”

“Celeste personally?”

“No.”

“Her chief of staff.”

“What did they say?”

“That the school order needed a luxury upgrade.”

Elena looked at Sarah.

“I warned them the substitute pastry had allergen restrictions.”

Sarah’s fingers tightened.

“What happened?”

“They sent a second instruction.”

Elena handed Felix her phone.

A screenshot showed an internal message.

Use revised batch.

Do not modify event signage.

Felix stared at the words.

The signage had labeled the pastries safe.

Sarah whispered, “They knew.”

Elena nodded.

“I thought it was about branding.”

“I didn’t know a child with allergies would be there.”

Felix’s face had gone white.

“Who sent this?”

Elena pointed toward the name.

N. Briggs.

Sarah recognized it instantly.

“Nathaniel Briggs.”

Celeste’s attorney.

Felix called his new lawyer.

“Preserve everything connected to Briggs.”

Sarah looked at him.

“You think he did this for Celeste?”

“I think he is arrogant enough to believe attorney-client privilege can hide anything.”

An hour later, Felix’s lawyer called back.

His voice was tense.

“There’s a bigger problem.”

“What?”

“Nathaniel Briggs was just seen entering Mount Grace.”

Felix stood.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

Sarah looked through the glass toward Lily.

Then she saw a man in a dark suit turn the corner at the far end of the hallway.

May you like

Nathaniel Briggs was walking directly toward the pediatric wing.
