Chapter 16 - The Evidence She Couldn’t Explain

Celeste was arrested before sunrise.

The news reached every financial network in America before breakfast.

Her attorneys called it an outrageous misunderstanding.

Her spokesperson called the search politically motivated.

Briggs disappeared from public view.

Felix ignored the television.

He sat beside Lily.

Her condition was improving.

That was the only headline he cared about.

Sarah entered with coffee.

“They charged her.”

Felix nodded.

“I heard.”

“You don’t look relieved.”

“I thought I would.”

He stared at Lily.

“But none of it changes what almost happened.”

Sarah sat beside him.

“No.”

“It doesn’t.”

For several minutes, they listened to the quiet hospital room.

Then Felix said, “I’m sorry.”

Sarah looked at him.

“For what part?”

“All of it.”

“That’s too large for one apology.”

“I know.”

She studied him.

“You were lied to too.”

“I still benefited from the lie.”

Sarah did not argue.

That mattered.

Felix continued.

“Your recipes became my flagship brand.”

“Your silence protected my reputation.”

“Your daughter grew up without me while I stood on magazine covers talking about legacy.”

Sarah’s expression softened.

“You didn’t know about Lily.”

“I should have known enough about you to question why you vanished.”

That truth was harder.

Sarah looked away.

“Yes.”

Felix accepted it.

Later that afternoon, the paternity results arrived.

Sarah did not need them.

Felix did.

Not emotionally.

Legally.

The report confirmed what both already knew.

Felix Kingsley was Lily Marlowe’s biological father.

He read the page.

Then folded it carefully.

Lily woke.

“What’s that?”

Felix smiled.

“Paperwork.”

“Boring?”

“The most important boring paper I’ve ever seen.”

Lily held out her hand.

“Can I see?”

Felix looked at Sarah.

Sarah nodded.

He showed Lily the result.

She could not understand most of it.

But one line was simple enough.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99%.

Lily pointed.

“That means you’re really my dad?”

Felix’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Even when we leave the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Even if you don’t own your big hotels anymore?”

Felix laughed.

“Especially then.”

Lily thought about it.

“Okay.”

Then she returned the paper.

As if accepting a father required no more ceremony than that.

Felix bent his head.

Sarah saw his shoulders shake once.

She placed her hand on his back.

It was the first time she had touched him without anger in seven years.

Then Felix’s phone buzzed.

A message from his lawyer.

Nathaniel Briggs had requested immunity in exchange for testimony.

His first claim was explosive.

Celeste had ordered both incidents.

But she had not acted alone.

Someone inside Kingsley had helped her access Lily’s medical file.

And the name Briggs gave was Odette Kingsley.
