Chapter 17 - The Last Lie

Felix confronted his mother in the hospital chapel.

Odette did not deny giving Celeste access to the old archive.

She denied knowing why Celeste wanted it.

“That file contained Sarah’s medical disclosures.”

“I know.”

“And Lily’s risk factors.”

“Not Lily’s.”

“Sarah’s.”

Felix stared at her.

“You knew those risks could be inherited.”

Odette closed her eyes.

“I did not believe Celeste would hurt anyone.”

“But you gave her the weapon.”

Odette flinched.

The word landed.

Felix continued.

“Briggs says Celeste asked for the pregnancy archive three days ago.”

“Yes.”

“What reason did she give?”

Odette looked toward the chapel windows.

“She said she needed to assess potential inheritance exposure.”

“And you gave it to her.”

“Yes.”

“After you saw Lily.”

“Yes.”

Felix turned away.

For a moment, Odette believed she had lost him permanently.

Maybe she had.

Then Sarah entered.

She had heard enough.

“You want forgiveness?”

Odette looked at her.

“I don’t expect it.”

“Good.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“Then do something useful.”

“What?”

“Testify.”

Odette’s face tightened.

“Against Celeste?”

“Against all of it.”

Sarah pointed toward the city outside.

“Tell the board.”

“Tell investigators.”

“Tell the public.”

“Tell them you threatened me.”

“Tell them you buried Lily.”

“Tell them you stole my work.”

Odette’s breathing became shallow.

“You are asking me to destroy my reputation.”

Sarah stared at her.

“My daughter almost lost her life because everyone in your world was more afraid of embarrassment than truth.”

“Your reputation is not the emergency.”

Odette lowered her eyes.

The sentence struck deeper than Sarah expected.

The next morning, Odette released a public statement.

It was not written by Kingsley public relations.

It contained no excuses.

She admitted Sarah’s departure had been coerced.

She admitted the Marlowe recipes originated with Sarah.

She admitted she concealed information about Sarah’s pregnancy from Felix.

She admitted providing Celeste access to archived records.

Kingsley Hospitality stock fell immediately.

Three board members resigned.

News vans surrounded headquarters.

Odette stepped down as acting chief executive.

For the first time in forty-one years, she had no title.

Felix watched the statement from Lily’s room.

Sarah stood beside him.

“Do you believe her?”

“That she’s sorry?”

Sarah nodded.

Felix thought for a long time.

“I believe she finally understands that being sorry doesn’t erase consequences.”

Sarah looked at him.

“That may be the first honest thing anyone in your family has learned.”

Lily stirred.

“Mom?”

Sarah went to her.

“I’m here.”

“Can we go home soon?”

The doctor entered behind her.

“If tonight’s tests look good, tomorrow.”

Lily smiled.

Felix felt a kind of happiness money had never produced.

Then his lawyer called.

Celeste had made bail.

And she was already giving interviews.

Her story was simple.

Sarah had orchestrated everything to steal Kingsley Hospitality.

The final war had moved out of the hospital.

And into every home in America.
