Chapter 4 - LOCKER 317Harbor National Trust occupied an old stone building overlooking the Long Island Sound.

Detective Bennett accompanied Ethan to the private vault.

Sophie remained with Ethan’s sister, Claire, under police protection.

The bank manager examined the blue key.

“This locker is registered to Anna Mercer.”

Ethan looked at him.

“My wife died two years ago.”

“The annual fees were prepaid for five years.”

“Why was I never notified?”

“The account instructions prohibited contact unless someone presented the key.”

The manager led Ethan and Detective Bennett through two steel doors.

Locker 317 was larger than an ordinary safe-deposit box.

The blue key opened the first lock.

The bank manager used a second key for the other.

Inside was a black document case.

Ethan placed it on a private viewing table.

The first folder contained photographs of Celeste and Richard together.

They were not family photographs.

In one image, they were kissing outside a hotel in Paris.

In another, they wore wedding rings while standing beside a courthouse.

A certified marriage record was attached.

CELESTE VALE AND RICHARD VALE.

The ceremony had taken place seven years earlier.

Celeste was still legally married to Richard.

Her marriage to Ethan had never been valid.

The next file contained bank statements.

Richard and Celeste controlled companies in Switzerland, Monaco, and the Cayman Islands.

Millions of dollars had moved through them.

Several transfers originated from Mercer Holdings.

Anna had marked each suspicious payment in red.

Detective Bennett opened another envelope.

Inside was a copy of Sophie’s birth certificate, a guardianship application, and a document written in German.

The bank’s translator was summoned.

He read the document carefully.

“It concerns a private family trust in Zurich.”

“What trust?” Ethan asked.

“The Whitmore-Mercer Heritage Trust.”

Ethan recognized the name.

Anna’s grandfather had created it decades earlier.

He had been told the trust was dissolved before their marriage.

The translator continued.

“Upon Anna Mercer’s death, her daughter Sophie became the sole beneficiary.”

“How much is it worth?”

The translator looked at the final page.

“Approximately six hundred and twenty million dollars.”

Ethan stared at him.

The document required Sophie to appear in person before the Zurich trustees if a new guardian sought control of the assets.

Celeste had forged papers claiming Ethan was dead.

She planned to present herself as Sophie’s surviving mother.

Richard’s false passport listed him as the trust’s financial representative.

Ethan opened the last envelope.

Inside was a memory card labeled with Anna’s handwriting.

For Ethan, if my accident was not an accident.
