Chapter 9 - THE HIDDEN TRUSTEEMarcus Stern entered the United States two days before Sophie was locked inside the suitcase.

Customs records showed that he arrived under a diplomatic business exemption.

He had not left the country.

His last known location was a hotel in Manhattan.

By the time federal agents searched the room, it was empty.

They found burnt documents in the bathroom sink.

One page remained partly readable.

It authorized the immediate transfer of the Whitmore-Mercer trust after an in-person verification in New York.

Celeste had changed the plan.

She intended to take Sophie to a private meeting near the airport.

Once Stern saw the child and signed the papers, Celeste and Richard would fly away with control of the trust.

The Zurich tickets were camouflage.

Their true destination remained unknown.

Ethan returned to Sophie’s protected location.

She sat at a kitchen table drawing stars with blue crayons.

“Are you mad at me?” she asked.

“Never.”

“I took Mommy’s picture when Celeste told me not to.”

“That was brave.”

“Mom said the picture was only for us.”

Ethan sat beside her.

“Did Mom ever tell you anything else about it?”

Sophie thought carefully.

“She said the lighthouse would know when the stars were gone.”

Ethan looked at Claire.

Their family owned an abandoned lighthouse cottage near Mystic.

Anna visited it often during the final months of her life.

Ethan had assumed she wanted privacy.

Police searched the property that evening.

The lighthouse had not operated in decades.

Its upper room contained a small desk facing the ocean.

Inside the desk was a notebook written in Anna’s private shorthand.

Ethan could read only parts of it.

Claire had learned the same shorthand from Anna.

Together, they translated the entries.

Anna documented Richard’s theft from Mercer Holdings.

She also described secret meetings between Celeste and Marcus Stern.

The final entry mentioned a man identified only as H.

H knows about the brake system.

H arranged Richard’s access.

H is inside Ethan’s company.

Ethan turned the page.

It had been torn out.

Someone else had visited the lighthouse.

Fresh footprints marked the dusty floor.

A car engine started outside.

Ethan rushed to the window.

A dark vehicle sped away along the coastal road.

On the desk, beneath the missing page, someone had placed a Mercer Holdings security badge.

The photograph belonged to Ethan’s trusted security director.

Noah Grant.
