Chapter 1 - The Name That Silenced the Lobby

Charlotte Vale tasted blood before she heard the first gasp.
Her palms burned against the polished marble as Celeste Harrington released her arm and stepped back as though she had just thrown garbage onto the street.
“Security.”
Celeste lifted her chin.
“Remove her before she embarrasses this hotel any further.”
No one moved.
Charlotte stayed on one knee.
Her dark hair had fallen across her face.
The black tank top and faded jeans she had chosen that morning made her look exactly like what she wanted people to see.
Ordinary.
Powerless.
Forgettable.
That disguise had worked perfectly.
Perhaps too perfectly.
Celeste turned toward the crowd with a satisfied smile.
“This is what happens when management gets careless.”
A few guests looked away.
Others raised their phones.
One elderly woman whispered something to her husband.
Charlotte slowly wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth.
Then the elevator doors opened.
A silver-haired man in a charcoal suit stepped into the lobby.
Grant Holloway had managed the Solmere Hotel for twenty-two years.
He had known Charlotte since she was six years old.
He stopped walking.
His face went white.
“Miss Vale?”
The lobby became so quiet that Charlotte could hear water trickling from the marble fountain thirty feet away.
Celeste laughed.
“You know this woman?”
Grant stared at her.
Then he looked at Charlotte’s bruised cheek.
His expression changed from confusion to horror.
“Know her?”
He swallowed.
“This hotel belongs to her family.”
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
Charlotte stood.
Grant immediately moved toward her.
“Miss Vale, what happened?”
Charlotte held up one hand.
“Not yet.”
Grant stopped.
Celeste glanced around nervously.
“What is this?”
Charlotte looked directly at her.
“My name is Charlotte Vale.”
Someone near the reception desk gasped.
Another phone rose into the air.
Charlotte continued.
“My mother was Eleanor Vale.”
The founder and majority owner of the Solmere Hospitality Group.
Celeste’s face drained of color.
“No.”
Charlotte almost smiled.
“Yes.”
“But Charlotte Vale disappeared.”
“That’s what someone wanted everyone to believe.”
Celeste stepped backward.
Charlotte could see the calculation beginning behind her eyes.
Fear was replacing arrogance.
But Charlotte had not returned to Solmere merely to humiliate Celeste.
She had come because three nights earlier she had received a package with no return address.
Inside was her mother’s old gold watch.
A hotel access key.
And one handwritten sentence.
DON’T TRUST THE BOARD.
Grant lowered his voice.
“Your uncle is upstairs.”
Charlotte looked toward the private elevators.
Richard Vale.
Her mother’s younger brother.
The man who had taken control of Solmere after Eleanor’s death.
The man who had told the world Charlotte was too devastated to participate in company affairs.
The man Charlotte had once trusted more than anyone outside her immediate family.
Charlotte reached into her pocket.
Her fingers closed around the mysterious brass key.
“Good.”
She looked at Grant.
“Tell Richard his niece came home.”
Before Grant could answer, a voice came from behind her.
“There’s no need.”
Charlotte turned.
Richard Vale stood at the top of the marble staircase.
And beside him was a uniformed police officer.
Richard looked at Charlotte without surprise.
Almost as if he had been waiting.
Then he smiled.
“Charlotte.”
His eyes moved toward the officer.
“I’m afraid my niece is having another episode.”
Charlotte’s blood went cold.
Richard descended one step.
“Officer.”
May you like
He pointed directly at her.
“Please take her into custody.”
