Chapter 20 - The Woman Who Owned More Than a Hotel

One year after Charlotte was dragged across the Solmere lobby, she returned to the exact place where it happened.

The marble had been replaced during renovation.

The orchids were different.

The chandeliers remained.

But the hotel no longer felt like a monument to powerful people.

Charlotte had changed that.

Employee names appeared beside executive names in company reports.

Housekeepers received profit-sharing.

Medical coverage expanded.

The lowest-paid workers received the largest percentage raises.

The secret executive elevator was removed.

Even the presidential penthouse had changed.

Charlotte converted half of it into temporary housing for families of children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Grant called it reckless generosity.

Charlotte called it rent.

Celeste arrived wearing a simple navy dress.

No photographers.

No diamonds.

No entourage.

She stopped beside the place where she had once dragged Charlotte.

“I still hate walking through here.”

“Good.”

Celeste looked offended.

Charlotte smiled.

“It means you remember.”

Celeste laughed.

Eleanor joined them.

She still used a cane occasionally.

But her strength had returned.

She looked around the lobby.

“Your father would barely recognize Solmere.”

Charlotte looked at her.

“That was the idea.”

Ethan arrived last.

He carried no briefcase.

No evidence.

No secrets.

For once, everyone standing there had nothing to hide.

Charlotte thought about the woman she had been one year earlier.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

Disguised.

She had walked into Solmere believing she needed to prove she owned it.

Now she understood something Samuel had known before anyone else.

Ownership was not a name on a deed.

It was responsibility.

It was knowing when to fight.

And knowing when power itself had become the prison.

A young receptionist approached Charlotte nervously.

“Miss Vale?”

“Yes?”

“A package was delivered for you.”

Charlotte frowned.

“From whom?”

“No name.”

Everyone went silent.

Celeste looked at her.

“Please tell me we’re done with mysterious packages.”

Charlotte smiled.

“I would love to.”

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Four people stood outside a hotel Charlotte did not recognize.

Samuel Vale.

Eleanor Vale.

Victor Harrington.

And a fourth man whose face had been scratched away.

Charlotte turned the photograph over.

A handwritten message covered the back.

VICTOR WAS NEVER THE BEGINNING.

Charlotte’s smile vanished.

Eleanor took the photograph.

Her face turned white.

Charlotte noticed.

“You know him.”

Eleanor said nothing.

“Mom.”

Eleanor slowly sat down.

“I thought he was dead.”

Charlotte’s heartbeat quickened.

“Who?”

Eleanor stared at the damaged photograph.

“The man who financed the first Solmere.”

Charlotte looked at Grant.

He appeared equally confused.

Eleanor continued.

“He gave Victor the money.”

“What money?”

“To buy his original shares.”

Celeste stepped closer.

“Why would that matter now?”

Eleanor looked at Charlotte.

“Because Victor didn’t create the network we uncovered.”

A long silence followed.

“He inherited it.”

Charlotte felt cold.

“From whom?”

Eleanor pointed to the scratched-out face.

“This man.”

Ethan examined the photograph.

“Do you have a name?”

Eleanor whispered it.

“Alexander Kane.”

Grant nearly dropped his phone.

Charlotte noticed.

“What?”

Grant looked at her.

“Alexander Kane died thirty years ago.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with a fear Charlotte had never seen before.

“Because six days before my crash.”

She looked directly at Charlotte.

“He called me.”

Charlotte stopped breathing.

The lobby around them continued normally.

Guests checked in.

Elevators opened.

A child laughed near the fountain.

Outside, Manhattan traffic moved beneath the afternoon sun.

Everything looked safe.

Then Charlotte’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One new message.

She opened it.

WELCOME HOME, CHARLOTTE.

A second message arrived immediately.

YOUR FATHER FOUND OUT WHO I WAS.

A third followed.

YOUR MOTHER RAN FROM ME.

Then the final message appeared.

NOW LET’S SEE WHAT YOU DO.

Charlotte slowly raised her eyes toward the enormous glass entrance of the Solmere Hotel.

Across the street stood a man in a dark coat.

Silver hair.

Black gloves.

Watching her.

Charlotte moved toward the doors.

The man smiled.

Then disappeared into the crowd.

Charlotte tightened her hand around the photograph.

One empire had fallen.

One family had finally faced its past.

And for the first time in her life, Charlotte Vale truly owned her future.

But somewhere beyond the doors of Solmere, someone had been waiting decades for her to claim it.

May you like

And this time, the enemy already knew exactly who she was.
