Chapter 6 - The First Lie

Charlotte left the penthouse through the service entrance before Richard and Victor discovered her.

By sunrise, she was inside Grant’s apartment overlooking Central Park.

Neither of them had slept.

Grant stared at the photograph of Eleanor, Richard, Victor, and Celeste.

“I haven’t seen Victor Harrington since 2015.”

“The year he supposedly died.”

“Yes.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Tell me how Solmere really started.”

Grant hesitated.

That hesitation answered more than words.

“My mother did not build it alone.”

“No.”

Grant sat down.

“Eleanor, Richard, Victor Harrington, and your father, Samuel Vale, started the first hotel together.”

Charlotte went still.

“My father?”

Samuel had died when Charlotte was nine.

She had always been told he had avoided business.

Grant shook his head.

“He designed the financial structure.”

Charlotte stared at him.

“Why was his name erased?”

“I don’t know.”

Grant finally told her the story.

The first Solmere Hotel had nearly failed.

Victor wanted to sell.

Richard wanted outside investors.

Samuel wanted to restructure.

Eleanor fought to keep control.

Then something happened.

Samuel died during a sailing trip.

Victor surrendered his shares.

Richard stayed as minority partner.

Eleanor became the public face of everything.

Three tragedies.

Three shifts of power.

Charlotte suddenly saw the pattern.

“My father’s death.”

Grant looked at her.

“It was ruled accidental.”

“So was my mother’s.”

Silence followed.

Charlotte opened her mother’s recorder again.

There were seventeen files.

She had only heard the first.

The second recording was dated two weeks before Eleanor’s death.

Charlotte pressed play.

Eleanor spoke quietly.

“Charlotte believes Samuel drowned.”

Charlotte closed her eyes.

“He didn’t.”

Grant stood.

Eleanor continued.

“I have spent twenty years protecting her from the truth.”

Charlotte’s chest tightened.

“The night Samuel died, he discovered that Victor was laundering money through the hotel.”

Grant whispered.

“Jesus.”

“He threatened to go to federal authorities.”

Eleanor paused.

“Victor stopped him.”

Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears.

“But Richard helped cover it up.”

Grant looked away.

The recording ended with Eleanor’s confession.

“I stayed silent because Victor threatened Charlotte.”

Charlotte stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

For twenty years, her mother had carried the truth alone.

Richard had helped hide her father’s murder.

And Eleanor had continued working beside him.

Not because she forgave him.

Because she had been protecting Charlotte.

Grant’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Charlotte stepped closer.

Grant looked directly at her.

“Someone found Nathan.”

Her stomach dropped.

“Is he alive?”

Grant slowly lowered the phone.

“No.”

Nathan Cole had been murdered inside a hospital that only three people knew he was in.

Charlotte.

Grant.

And the private physician Grant had trusted with his life.

Charlotte looked at him.

“Someone inside your circle is feeding them information.”

Grant nodded.

Then his phone buzzed again.

This time it was a photograph.

Charlotte sleeping in Grant’s guest room thirty minutes earlier.

Someone had taken it through the window.

Underneath were six words.

WE CAN REACH HER ANYWHERE.
