Chapter 19 - The Last Night at Solmere

Victor’s disappearance lasted six hours.

That was enough.

Charlotte immediately understood where he would go.

Not Mexico.

Not Europe.

Not a private airport.

Solmere.

The original hotel.

Charlotte arrived shortly before midnight.

The building had been evacuated.

Police surrounded the property.

Victor had taken Eleanor hostage.

Again.

He stood with her on the rooftop where Samuel once proposed.

Charlotte walked through the rooftop door alone.

Victor held a gun against Eleanor’s side.

“You should have sold this place too.”

Charlotte looked at her mother.

Eleanor was frightened.

But calm.

Charlotte turned to Victor.

“You escaped federal custody to come here?”

“To finish what started here.”

“Samuel?”

“Everything.”

Victor laughed softly.

“Your father thought he could expose me.”

“He did.”

“Twenty years late.”

“But everyone knows.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Charlotte continued.

“They know about Samuel.”

“They know about Caroline.”

“They know about Richard.”

“They know about my mother.”

“And they know what you are.”

Victor’s hand tightened around the gun.

“You destroyed Solmere.”

“No.”

“I freed it.”

“You sound like Samuel.”

“Good.”

Victor pushed Eleanor toward the edge.

Charlotte’s heartbeat hammered.

“Let her go.”

“Give me the original recording.”

“Federal prosecutors have copies.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Victor looked strangely tired.

“Because I want the original.”

Charlotte understood.

It was no longer about evidence.

It was about control.

Victor had spent his entire life rewriting what happened.

Samuel’s recording was the one thing he could not rewrite.

Charlotte removed the old memory card from her pocket.

Victor’s eyes locked on it.

“Throw it here.”

Charlotte held it over the rooftop edge.

“Release my mother.”

Victor hesitated.

Then shoved Eleanor forward.

Charlotte caught her.

At the same moment, Victor lunged for the memory card.

Charlotte opened her fingers.

The tiny card fell.

Victor reached after it.

His foot slipped on the wet stone.

For one second, Charlotte caught his wrist.

Victor stared up at her.

The same man who had destroyed her family now depended on her grip.

“Help me.”

Charlotte strained.

Police rushed through the rooftop door.

Victor’s other hand reached inside his coat.

Eleanor screamed.

“He has another gun.”

Charlotte released him.

Victor fell onto a lower maintenance platform.

He survived.

His legs did not.

Police arrested him again.

This time he left Solmere in an ambulance surrounded by federal agents.

Charlotte stood beside Eleanor as dawn spread across the horizon.

Below them, the original Solmere sign glowed.

Eleanor leaned against her daughter.

“Your father would be proud of you.”

Charlotte looked at the sunrise.

“I hope so.”

Six months later, Victor Harrington was convicted.

Richard pleaded guilty.

Corrupt directors went to prison.

Celeste created a foundation in Caroline’s name.

Ethan returned the engagement ring Charlotte had given back years earlier.

He did not ask her to marry him again.

Not yet.

He simply placed it in her hand.

“For whenever your life belongs to you.”

Charlotte closed her fingers around it.

May you like

For the first time, it did.

Almost.
