Chapter 4: Confrontation at the Threshold

Sarah didn't call the detective assigned to the case. Detective Miller had already made up his mind that this was a case of parental neglect, hinting that Lily might have found the drugs inside Sarah and Mark's own medicine cabinet. If she wanted justice, she had to corner the rat herself.
She crossed the gravel driveway, her boots crunching loudly, and marched up the wooden steps of the Vance porch. She slammed her fist against the door.
It opened slowly. Evelyn Vance stood there, wearing a pristine silk blouse, though her frantic eyes and the deep dark circles under them betrayed her composure.
"Sarah," Evelyn said, her voice trembling slightly. "How is little Lily doing? We've been praying so hard..."
"Cut the act, Evelyn," Sarah said, pushing past her into the foyer without an invitation. "I know about Apex Logistics. I know about the vault. And I know you bought a signal jammer on Amazon two weeks ago using a burner account."

Evelyn slammed the door shut, her face turning instantly white. "You don't know what you're talking about. Get out of my house before I call the police."
"Call them," Sarah challenged, stepping closer until she could smell the nervous sweat on the other woman. "Let's tell them together how a stolen, half-million-dollar bracelet ended up on my poisoned daughter's wrist right before she was thrown into a trash bag to be crushed by the morning garbage truck."
