Chapter 8: The Cornered Mother

The woods ended abruptly at a steep, rocky ravine that fed into the local creek. Sarah skidded to a halt at the edge, the loose dirt crumbling beneath her boots. It was a twenty-foot drop onto jagged stones.
She turned around just as Thomas emerged from the treeline, his face contorted in rage, the gun raised.
"End of the line, neighbor," he sneered, breathing heavily. "You should have let the detectives handle it. Now you're just going to be another tragic casualty of a suburban home invasion."
"You're a monster," Sarah spat, backing up until her heels hung over the empty air of the ravine. "Both of you."

"Maybe," Thomas said, tightening his finger on the trigger. "But we're monsters who are going to get away with it."
A sudden, sharp crack echoed through the trees. But it didn't come from Thomas's gun.
