Before Sarah could respond, a heavy footstep echoed from the top of the stairs.
Sarah looked up. Standing on the landing wasn't Evelyn's elderly father, but a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a dark tactical jacket. In his hand, he held a compact semi-automatic pistol.
"You talk too much, Evelyn," the man said, his voice dropping like an anvil in the quiet house.
Sarah recognized him instantly from the news. It was Thomas Vance, Evelyn’s older brother—a disgraced former state trooper who had been dishonorably discharged a year prior.
"Thomas, please," Evelyn gasped, looking up in terror. "She knows everything. We have to leave."

"We aren't going anywhere with a witness breathing down our necks," Thomas said coldly, aiming the barrel of the gun directly at Sarah's chest. "Evelyn might be an amateur embezzler who panics at the sight of a knocked-out kid, but I'm the one who procured the Rohypnol. And I'm the one who isn't going to federal prison."
Sarah’s mind raced. The quiet suburban neighborhood suddenly felt miles away from civilization. She was trapped in the house of the wolves, and no one knew she was there.
