Chapter 18 - THE INVITATION

A year after the engagement ended, I received an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was an invitation.

A community center opening in East Nashville.

I almost threw it away.

Then I saw the name at the bottom.

Project Coordinator: Vanessa Mitchell.

I attended.

Not secretly.

Not disguised.

I wore a blue suit and arrived in my own car.

The building had classrooms, a commercial kitchen, childcare space, and training rooms.

No champagne.

No crystal lights.

No social photographers.

Vanessa stood near the entrance holding a clipboard.

She saw me.

For half a second, fear crossed her face.

Then she walked over.

“Mrs. Carter.”

“Vanessa.”

“Thank you for coming.”

“You invited me.”

“I didn’t think you would.”

“I almost didn’t.”

She nodded.

“That’s fair.”

I looked around.

“This is good work.”

Her eyes became wet.

“Thank you.”

I noticed something.

She wore no diamonds.

No expensive label I recognized.

Just black pants and a simple green blouse.

“You look different.”

She smiled.

“I am trying to be.”

I appreciated the wording.

Trying.

Not claiming.

A volunteer approached with a box.

Vanessa immediately took one side.

“Let me help.”

They carried it together.

No cameras.

No applause.

When she returned, she looked at me.

“I still think about that day.”

“So do I.”

“I wish I could erase it.”

“You can’t.”

“I know.”

I studied her.

“But you can make sure the woman holding the hose no longer decides who you become.”

She swallowed.

“Ethan told you I apologized to Daniel?”

“He did not.”

“Oh.”

“Daniel told me.”

She smiled faintly.

“How is he?”

“Managing a hotel.”

Her eyes widened.

“Good.”

There was genuine happiness in her voice.

Then someone behind me spoke.

“I was wondering how long you two would talk before noticing me.”

I turned.

May you like

Ethan stood in the doorway.

Vanessa froze.
