Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Offer

Brenda slid the folder toward me.

Rebecca remained behind the observation glass.

Brenda believed we were alone.

We were not.

“I want my family protected.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of financial records.

Some carried my forged signature.

Others carried Derek’s.

One document showed a proposed $3 million transfer into Caldwell Family Holdings.

Another showed exactly where the money would go.

Mortgage.

Taxes.

Vendor debts.

Private loans.

And $400,000 labeled Executive Stabilization Payment.

“To Derek?”

Brenda did not answer.

“So even while the estate collapsed, your son planned to pay himself.”

“He has obligations.”

“He has greed.”

Brenda’s eyes hardened.

“You married him.”

“For fourteen hours.”

“You married a Caldwell.”

“I married a liar.”

She leaned closer.

“The baby is a Caldwell.”

My blood turned cold.

“No.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

“You can change your name.”

“You can divorce.”

“But blood doesn’t disappear.”

I forced myself to remain still.

“How do you know I’m pregnant?”

“Tessa.”

“She only suspected.”

Brenda smiled.

Then I understood.

“You accessed my medical account.”

Her silence confirmed it.

Derek knew the password to an old email address I had used during wedding planning.

The clinic portal had sent an appointment confirmation there.

Brenda had seen it.

She had invaded something more private than my finances.

“What do you want?”

“Come back.”

I almost laughed.

“For what?”

“Appear publicly with Derek.”

“Sign a temporary financial arrangement.”

“Withdraw the protective order.”

“And then?”

“We rebuild trust.”

“No.”

“Think about your baby.”

“I am.”

“You really want your child born into a public scandal?”

“I would rather raise my child inside a storm than inside your house.”

Her face changed.

That finally hurt her.

Brenda stood.

“You think money protects you.”

“No.”

“It does not.”

“I know.”

“You think Rebecca protects you.”

“She helps.”

“You think your parents protect you.”

“They do.”

Brenda smiled again.

“But Derek is still the father.”

I said nothing.

“He has rights.”

“So do I.”

“Courts like fathers.”

“Courts also like evidence.”

For the first time, Brenda glanced around the room.

I watched realization arrive.

“You’re recording this.”

“Yes.”

She stood so abruptly the chair struck the wall.

“You manipulative little—”

The door opened.

Rebecca entered.

“You should probably stop talking now, Mrs. Caldwell.”

Brenda stared at us.

Then she grabbed her handbag.

Before leaving, she turned toward me.

“The estate goes to foreclosure tomorrow.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“If that happens, Derek will blame you.”

“He already blames me for everything.”

Her final words were almost a whisper.

“That’s what worries me.”

At 6:42 the next morning, the Caldwell lender filed its foreclosure action.

At 7:03, Derek disappeared.

And at 7:18, Michael called me.

“He took a gun from Frank’s safe.”
