Chapter 6 - THE BRIDE SPEAKS

At seven the next morning, Preston’s bride arrived at the hospital.

Her name was Claire Morgan.

Until that moment, I had thought of her mostly as the woman who had stared at the aisle runner while Sophie was bleeding.

I was not prepared for the person who walked into the waiting area.

Claire was still wearing her wedding dress.

The train had been gathered over one arm.

Her carefully styled hair had fallen loose.

Her mascara was gone.

And she was carrying Preston’s wedding ring in her hand.

“I need to speak to you.”

I looked at Sophie’s closed hospital door.

“She’s sleeping.”

“I’m glad.”

Claire sat across from me.

For several seconds neither of us spoke.

Then she placed the ring on the table between us.

“I left him.”

I didn’t react.

“I should have done something when he hit Sophie.”

“Yes.”

The word surprised her.

Maybe she expected comfort.

I didn’t have any to give.

“I froze.”

“Yes.”

“I kept thinking someone else would stop him.”

“No one did.”

Her eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

I believed that she was sorry.

But regret and innocence are not the same thing.

“What do you know about the bracelet?”

Claire inhaled.

“More than I told the police.”

I leaned forward.

She opened her phone.

There were screenshots.

Messages between Preston and my mother.

Some dated weeks earlier.

MOM: Evelyn still knows nothing about the trust.

PRESTON: Keep it that way until the wedding.

MOM: Your father says the waiver must be signed before Monday.

PRESTON: She won’t sign willingly.

MOM: Then give her a reason.

I read the last line twice.

My stomach turned.

Claire whispered.

“I found those on Preston’s iPad.”

“When?”

“Last night.”

“Why did you look?”

“Because after security separated us, he kept saying the same thing.”

“What?”

“That you had ruined everything.”

I looked up.

“Not Sophie?”

Claire shook her head.

“You.”

She scrolled farther.

Another message appeared.

PRESTON: If the first item isn’t enough, use Grandmother’s bracelet.

MOM: Rebecca will handle it.

PRESTON: Evelyn always panics when Sophie is involved.

I felt something cold move through my chest.

Claire continued.

“There’s one more.”

The next screenshot was from my father.

DAD: No permanent damage.

PRESTON: Obviously.

DAD: We need a scandal, not a lawsuit.

The room seemed to tilt.

My father knew.

Maybe not about the oak board.

But he knew Sophie was being used.

Claire started crying.

“I wore that bracelet because your mother told me it was tradition.”

She wiped her face.

“I didn’t know it was bait.”

I handed her phone back.

“You need to give those messages to the police.”

“I already did.”

For the first time, I really looked at her.

“You did?”

She nodded.

“And I told them something else.”

“What?”

“Preston has been moving money.”

My mind shifted.

“From where?”

“The hotel company.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked frightened.

“But I heard him tell your father that Monday wasn’t just about control.”

I waited.

Claire whispered.

“They’re trying to stop someone from discovering what they’ve done.”

The trust fight suddenly became something larger.

Preston hadn’t only needed my shares.

He needed my silence.
