The Wedding Lie Chapter 13 — The Man Who Refused to Stay Dead

The stranger's applause echoed across the harbor.

Slow.

Measured.

Mocking.

Every deputy on the dock instinctively reached for a weapon.

Detective Maya Collins stepped in front of Claire and Lily.

"Nobody moves."

The man smiled.

He held up a leather wallet.

Inside was what appeared to be a federal identification badge.

"My name is Victor Kane."

"Federal Recovery Division."

Sheriff Greene frowned.

"I've never heard of that agency."

Kane's smile never faded.

"Most people haven't."

Detective Collins didn't even glance at the badge.

"Kevin."

Kevin Brooks was already typing on his tablet.

Ten seconds later, he looked up.

"It doesn't exist."

Kane sighed.

"I was hoping we'd skip this part."

With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the fake badge into the ocean.

"So much for introductions."

Michael Carter stepped forward.

His eyes never left Kane.

"I watched you die."

Kane laughed.

"You watched an explosion."

"Those aren't always the same thing."

Claire looked between them.

"You know him?"

Michael nodded slowly.

"We served together."

"He was intelligence."

"He sold military secrets to the highest bidder."

Kane tilted his head.

"And you tried to stop me."

Michael answered quietly.

"So I thought."

Detective Collins' voice was sharp.

"The microfilm."

"That's why you're here."

Kane smiled.

"Very good, Detective."

He looked directly at Claire.

"Your mother should've burned it."

Claire's hands curled into fists.

"You knew my mother?"

"I knew everyone."

He shrugged.

"Helen was simply unfortunate enough to fall in love with the wrong man."

Michael lunged forward.

Officer Ruiz grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

Kane wanted exactly that.

Chaos.

Meanwhile...

Ethan stood several feet away, handcuffed between two deputies.

His confidence had vanished.

He stared at Kane in genuine shock.

"You..."

Kane looked amused.

"You really thought Richard was the mastermind?"

Ethan said nothing.

Kane chuckled.

"Richard was useful."

"So were you."

The realization spread across Ethan's face.

Every lie.

Every order.

Every payment.

He had never been the architect.

Only another pawn.

Kevin's laptop suddenly chimed.

"I've decrypted the rest of the microfilm."

Detective Collins hurried over.

"What did you find?"

Kevin enlarged a series of scanned documents.

"There are names."

Dozens of them.

Politicians.

Corporate executives.

Military contractors.

Bank account numbers.

Secret offshore transfers.

Officer Ruiz whistled softly.

"This could destroy careers."

Kevin shook his head.

"It could destroy governments."

Kane's smile disappeared.

"Give me the drive."

Collins closed the laptop.

"No."

Kane sighed dramatically.

"I was hoping you'd be reasonable."

He snapped his fingers.

Suddenly—

Three of the men standing behind him pulled concealed pistols.

The deputies immediately drew their weapons.

Within seconds...

The quiet harbor had become a standoff.

Lily instinctively reached for Claire's hand.

"Mom..."

Claire knelt beside her daughter.

"It's okay."

"No matter what happens..."

She looked into Lily's frightened eyes.

"...stay behind me."

Michael heard those words.

Without hesitation, he stepped in front of both of them.

This time...

No one would take his family away.

Kane slowly began walking forward.

"You know what's ironic, Michael?"

"I spent thirty-five years hunting that microfilm."

"And the entire time..."

He smiled.

"...it was hidden inside a child's keepsake."

Michael answered calmly.

"It wasn't hidden."

"It was protected."

The silence broke with the distant sound of helicopters.

Real helicopters.

Not news helicopters.

Dark blue.

State Police.

Seconds later, a convoy of black SUVs raced down the harbor road.

Detective Collins narrowed her eyes.

"This time..."

"They're ours."

The first SUV stopped hard.

Agents wearing jackets marked FBI poured out.

The lead agent held up his badge.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation!"

"Everyone drop your weapons!"

Kane laughed.

"You're too late."

He grabbed one of his own men and shoved him toward the agents.

Gunfire erupted.

People dove for cover.

Claire threw herself over Lily.

Michael shielded them both.

Officer Ruiz tackled Ethan to the ground.

Detective Collins fired once.

The bullet shattered the windshield of Kane's SUV.

Kane jumped behind the driver's seat.

His engine roared to life.

The vehicle fishtailed across the dock.

Kevin shouted,

"He's getting away!"

Michael looked toward the old fishing boats tied to the pier.

Without saying a word, he sprinted.

He untied the fastest boat in the harbor.

Claire stared.

"What is he doing?"

Michael looked back only once.

Then smiled.

"I'm bringing this to an end."

He slammed the throttle forward.

The fishing boat shot across the water.

Kane's SUV crashed through the end of the pier onto a waiting barge.

The chase had begun.

As sirens echoed across Black Harbor...

Detective Collins looked down at Kevin's laptop.

One final file had just finished decrypting.

Unlike the others...

It wasn't a government document.

It was a photograph.

A recent one.

Taken only three weeks earlier.

It showed Richard Bennett...

Shaking hands with Victor Kane.

Behind them stood Ethan.

All three men were smiling.

Across the bottom of the photo, someone had typed a single sentence.

"Family isn't always blood. Sometimes it's the people who choose the lie."

Detective Collins slowly closed the laptop.

Richard had lied about many things.

But one thing was now undeniable.

The conspiracy hadn't ended thirty-five years ago.

It had survived...

Right up until the wedding.

And now...

Only one man knew how far it truly reached.

May you like

Victor Kane.
