The Wedding Lie Chapter 8 — The Safety Deposit Box

The Wedding Lie

Chapter 8 — The Safety Deposit Box

James Mercer didn't sleep.

The brass key rested tightly in his wrinkled hand.

For twenty-seven years, he had carried it everywhere.

Not in his wallet.

Not in a drawer.

Always close enough that, if the day ever came...

The truth could finally be set free.

He looked toward the hospital window.

"The time has come," he whispered.

The next morning...

Detective Maya Collins arrived before sunrise.

James looked older than he had the day before.

Not because of his injuries.

Because he had stopped carrying the weight of the secret alone.

"You came."

"You asked me to."

He slowly opened his hand.

The small brass key glinted beneath the fluorescent lights.

"This unlocks Safety Deposit Box 214."

"First National Bank."

"Springfield."

Collins accepted the key carefully.

"What's inside?"

James smiled sadly.

"My apology."

Three hours later...

Collins and Officer Ruiz stood inside the quiet bank.

The manager verified the court order before leading them into the underground vault.

Thousands of steel boxes lined the walls.

Finally...

He stopped.

"Box 214."

He inserted the master key.

Collins inserted James' brass key.

The lock clicked.

She slowly pulled the box free.

Inside...

A weathered leather envelope.

A stack of photographs.

Several sealed medical files.

And a VHS cassette labeled in faded handwriting:

DELIVERY ROOM — JULY 14, 1991

Ruiz frowned.

"A videotape?"

The bank manager shook his head.

"Some hospitals recorded complicated births back then."

Collins carefully lifted the envelope.

Across the front were six handwritten words.

Open only if Claire survives.

The room fell silent.

Back at Police Headquarters...

The evidence team digitized the VHS tape.

Everyone gathered around the monitor.

The image flickered to life.

The quality was poor.

But the faces were unmistakable.

A young Helen Bennett lay exhausted in a hospital bed.

James Mercer stood nearby in a paramedic's uniform.

A doctor spoke quietly.

Then...

The camera turned toward the doorway.

A man rushed into the room.

He wasn't Richard Bennett.

He was younger.

Dark-haired.

Wearing military dress blues.

He grabbed Helen's hand.

Tears streamed down his face.

"I'm here."

"I'm so sorry."

Helen smiled weakly.

"You came."

The man kissed her forehead.

Then looked down at the newborn baby in the bassinet.

"My little girl..."

Ruiz stared at the screen.

"That's not Richard."

Collins paused the video.

"Run facial recognition."

Thirty seconds later...

The computer identified him.

Captain Michael Carter.

United States Air Force.

Declared killed during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

Ruiz blinked.

"Dead?"

Kevin Brooks looked closer.

"No."

He enlarged the military record.

"Declared missing."

"Body never recovered."

Collins slowly leaned back.

"So Claire's biological father..."

"...may still be alive."

Across town...

Claire was making pancakes with Lily.

The little girl giggled as she shaped blueberries into smiley faces.

It was the first genuine laugh Claire had heard since the wedding.

The sound almost made her cry.

Then the doorbell rang.

Detective Collins stood outside.

"I need to show you something."

Claire noticed the expression on her face.

"What happened?"

"Can we sit down?"

An hour later...

Claire watched the hospital video in complete silence.

When it ended...

She couldn't speak.

The man on the screen had looked at her as though she were the most precious thing in the world.

She had never seen Richard Bennett look at her that way.

Not once.

"This..."

She whispered.

"This can't be real."

Collins placed the medical records beside her.

"We've verified the tape."

"The date."

"The hospital."

"The staff."

"Everything matches."

Claire looked at the name.

Michael Carter.

The surname caught her attention immediately.

"Carter..."

She frowned.

"Noah."

Collins nodded.

"The hotel server."

"His last name is Carter."

Claire stared at her.

"You think..."

"We don't know."

"But it's a coincidence worth investigating."

Meanwhile...

Ethan sat inside a motel room, watching the news.

A breaking headline filled every channel.

POLICE RECOVER NEW EVIDENCE IN BENNETT WEDDING ASSAULT CASE.

His phone rang.

Richard.

"They found the deposit box."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I know."

"They're going to learn everything."

"No."

Richard's voice remained unnervingly calm.

"They've only learned half."

"What do you mean?"

"There are still letters."

Silence.

"They must never reach Claire."

Ethan swallowed.

"Where are they?"

Richard answered quietly.

"In my study."

Then he hung up.

That evening...

Claire received an unexpected visitor.

Vanessa.

Still wearing her wedding ring.

Although everyone knew the marriage had lasted less than twenty-four hours.

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

Claire said nothing.

Vanessa placed a small flash drive on the kitchen table.

"I found this hidden inside Ethan's laptop."

Claire looked at Collins.

The detective immediately connected it to her computer.

A folder appeared.

PRIVATE

Inside were dozens of files.

Financial records.

Emails.

Photos.

Then...

One folder named:

Project Lily.

Claire felt sick.

Collins opened it.

The first document was a typed checklist.

Place watch in purse.

Public accusation.

Witness pressure.

Family supports Ethan.

Remove Claire and Lily from Bennett Trust.

Secure inheritance before board meeting.

The room fell completely silent.

Claire couldn't breathe.

This wasn't a crime of passion.

It wasn't a mistake.

It had been planned.

Every detail.

Every word.

Even Lily's humiliation...

Had been written down like a business strategy.

Vanessa wiped away a tear.

"I didn't know until after the wedding."

Claire looked at her.

"Why are you helping us?"

Vanessa slowly removed her wedding ring.

She placed it beside the flash drive.

"Because monsters don't deserve loyalty."

Late that night...

Cyber analyst Kevin Brooks made one final discovery inside Ethan's files.

Hidden beneath encrypted folders...

He found an audio recording.

Only fourteen seconds long.

He pressed Play.

A man's voice spoke clearly.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't Richard.

It was Michael Carter.

"I'll come back for my daughter."

"I don't care how long it takes."

The recording ended.

Kevin looked at Detective Collins.

"If that's authentic..."

Collins finished the sentence.

"...then somewhere..."

"...Claire's father may still be alive."

Outside, thunder rolled across the Chicago skyline.

For the first time in decades...

May you like

A dead man's voice had returned.

And someone else had just heard it too.
