The Wedding Lie Chapter 5 — The Truth Buried in a Locked Drawer

Claire read the note three times before the words truly sank in.
"If you think the watch was the biggest lie in this family... you're about to discover who your real father is."
Her hands trembled.
"This has to be another trick."
Detective Maya Collins carefully sealed the note inside an evidence bag.
"Maybe."
She looked directly at Claire.
"But people running from the law usually don't invent lies that can be disproven."
"They reveal just enough truth to distract everyone from catching them."
Claire stared out the hospital window.
The Chicago skyline blurred through tears.
"My father is Richard Bennett."
Collins didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she asked quietly,
"Has he ever treated you like his daughter?"
The question landed harder than Claire expected.
Suddenly...
Old memories began surfacing.
Birthdays where Ethan received expensive bicycles while Claire received sweaters.
Family vacations where only Ethan appeared in framed photographs.
Her high school graduation.
Richard hadn't attended.
He'd claimed an important business meeting couldn't be postponed.
Two weeks later...
He proudly flew across the country to watch Ethan accept an award for "Young Entrepreneur of the Year."
Claire had spent years convincing herself there had been reasonable explanations.
Now...
Those explanations felt painfully thin.
"Ms. Bennett."
Collins broke the silence.
"I need permission to investigate your family's history."
Claire frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Birth certificates."
"Hospital records."
"Old financial documents."
"Anything connected to your parents."
Claire looked confused.
"Why?"
Collins slid Ethan's note across the table.
"Because if he's trying to distract us..."
She paused.
"...it won't work."
"But if he's telling the truth..."
She finished softly,
"...then whatever he's hiding may explain everything."
Claire took a deep breath.
"You have my permission."
Across town...
Ethan sat alone inside an abandoned hunting cabin nearly eighty miles outside Chicago.
Rain hammered against the roof.
His burner phone buzzed.
UNKNOWN NUMBER
He answered immediately.
"You shouldn't have run."
Richard's voice remained calm.
"I had no choice."
"You were supposed to destroy every copy."
"I thought I did."
Richard's silence was colder than anger.
"You didn't think."
"You panicked."
Ethan slammed his fist onto the wooden table.
"They recovered the footage!"
"I know."
"They'll arrest me."
"No."
Richard's answer came instantly.
"They'll arrest someone."
"But not if we move first."
Ethan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Richard spoke quietly.
"There is one person who can destroy Claire completely."
"You know where he is."
The line went dead.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
He hadn't spoken to that man in twenty years.
He had hoped never to see him again.
Meanwhile...
At Mercy General Hospital...
A gentle knock came at Lily's door.
Claire looked up.
A young man stood nervously in the hallway.
He couldn't have been older than twenty-three.
His hotel uniform had been replaced with jeans and a plain gray jacket.
"My name is Noah Carter."
"I worked the wedding."
Claire recognized him immediately.
One of the banquet servers.
His face was pale.
"I... I need to tell you something."
Detective Collins stepped beside him.
"You'll be protected."
Noah swallowed.
"I hope so."
He looked toward Lily, sleeping peacefully.
"I saw your brother."
Claire's heart raced.
"When?"
"Before the watch disappeared."
"He walked behind your daughter's chair."
"I thought he was leaving her a wedding favor."
Noah closed his eyes.
"I didn't realize..."
"...he was putting the watch into her purse."
Claire covered her mouth.
"You saw it?"
He nodded.
"I didn't understand until later."
"And then..."
"My phone started receiving threats."
Detective Collins immediately asked,
"From who?"
"I don't know."
"But they knew where my mother lives."
He handed Collins his phone.
Three anonymous text messages remained on the screen.
YOU SAW NOTHING.
THINK ABOUT YOUR MOTHER.
STAY QUIET.
Collins photographed every message.
"This wasn't just Ethan."
She looked at Claire.
"Someone else is helping him."
That evening...
Cyber analyst Kevin Brooks rushed into Collins' office carrying a thick folder.
"I found something."
He spread dozens of financial records across the conference table.
"What am I looking at?"
"Security Director Martin Hale."
Kevin pointed to a recent bank deposit.
"Three hundred thousand dollars."
"Deposited the morning after the wedding."
Ruiz stared at the paperwork.
"From where?"
Kevin tapped another document.
"A shell company."
"Lake Horizon Consulting."
Collins looked closer.
"Who owns it?"
Kevin smiled grimly.
"It took a while..."
"But I traced it."
He slid the final page across the table.
The listed owner was...
Richard Bennett.
Silence filled the room.
Ruiz finally exhaled.
"So Richard paid Hale to erase the footage."
Kevin nodded.
"It gets worse."
He opened another file.
"Lake Horizon Consulting has existed for twenty-seven years."
"It has paid dozens of people."
"Witnesses."
"Private investigators."
"Former employees."
Collins slowly looked up.
"This wasn't created for the wedding."
Kevin shook his head.
"No."
"It was created to keep secrets."
Late that night...
Claire finally convinced Lily to eat a little soup before going back to sleep.
As she tucked the blanket around her daughter, Lily whispered,
"Mom?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"When we go home..."
"...can we still plant flowers in the backyard?"
Claire smiled through her tears.
"Of course."
"The pink ones?"
"And the yellow ones."
Lily closed her eyes.
"I don't want to be scared anymore."
Claire gently kissed her forehead.
"You won't be."
Not again.
Not while she still had breath left in her body.
She looked out into the dark Chicago night.
For years she had believed she was fighting one cruel brother.
Now she understood.
She was fighting an entire family built on lies.
And somewhere beyond the city lights...
May you like
Someone who knew the biggest secret of all...
...was about to return.
