Chapter 5 - THE STORY THAT LEAKED

Three days later, Amy woke to forty-seven notifications.

Her name was everywhere.

HARRISON MARRIAGE IN CRISIS.

BILLIONAIRE WIFE VANISHES AFTER CHARITY GALA.

INSIDERS CLAIM AMY HARRISON SUFFERED “EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN.”

Amy stared at the final headline.

Emotional breakdown.

Her hands turned cold.

Ruth came upstairs carrying coffee and found Amy standing beside the table.

“What happened?”

Amy handed her the phone.

Ruth read quietly.

Then her mouth tightened.

“Is any of this true?”

“No.”

“Then somebody wants people to think it is.”

Amy opened the article.

An unnamed foundation source claimed Amy had become increasingly unstable in recent months.

Another claimed Daniel had spent months trying to protect her privacy.

A third described Vanessa as a loyal executive helping Daniel through a difficult personal crisis.

Amy’s jaw tightened.

“Vanessa.”

Ruth looked at her.

“You know that?”

“I know how she writes.”

Amy called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“I saw it.”

“Did you authorize this?”

“No.”

“Did your company?”

“No.”

“Then fix it.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“I’m already doing it.”

Amy almost snapped back.

Then he said something unexpected.

“But I need your permission before I say anything about you.”

She paused.

“What?”

“The easiest way to kill the story is to say you’re pregnant and left because of me.”

Amy’s heart pounded.

“I don’t want the pregnancy public.”

“Then it stays private.”

Even if protecting Amy made Daniel look worse.

The realization unsettled her.

“What are you going to say?”

“The truth that belongs to me.”

Two hours later, Daniel released a statement.

There had been no breakdown.

Amy had left because Daniel had failed privately as a husband.

He asked the press to respect her privacy.

He accepted full responsibility for the separation.

He mentioned neither Vanessa nor the pregnancy.

Then he called an emergency executive meeting.

Vanessa entered carrying a tablet.

Daniel slid printed copies of the leaked article across the table.

“Did you speak to any reporter?”

“No.”

“Did anyone on your team?”

“Not with my approval.”

Daniel looked toward the foundation’s legal counsel.

“Show her.”

An email appeared on the screen.

It came from Vanessa’s private assistant.

Talking points.

Amy emotionally fragile.

Daniel protective.

Vanessa supporting foundation continuity.

Vanessa’s face went blank.

“My assistant acted independently.”

Her assistant, seated at the other end of the room, stared at her.

“Ms. Cole told me exactly what to send.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

The room changed.

Daniel removed his glasses.

“You used my wife’s pain to protect your position.”

Vanessa stood.

“You’re overreacting because you feel guilty.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“I’m finally reacting appropriately.”

He pushed a termination letter across the table.

“You’re done.”

Vanessa stared at it.

“You can’t fire me over one media strategy.”

“I’m firing you because I no longer trust you.”

She looked around the table.

Nobody defended her.

Vanessa’s eyes returned to Daniel.

“You’ll regret this.”

Daniel remained seated.

“I already regret enough.”

By sunset, Vanessa Cole no longer worked for the Harrison Foundation.

But as she walked out of the building, she made one phone call.

“Run the second story.”

The person on the other end hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

Vanessa looked back at Daniel’s office windows.

May you like

“Yes.”

“If he wants truth, let’s give everyone truth.”
