Chapter 11 - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED ON THE MOUNTAIN

The memory returned fully that night.
Claire woke screaming.
Grant ran into the guest room.
She was standing beside the bed with both hands against the wall.
“The brakes.”
Grant approached slowly.
“What do you remember?”
“Everything.”
Claire closed her eyes.
She was back inside the car.
Rain struck the windshield.
Lily sang in the rear seat.
Claire pressed the brake.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
The mountain curve approached.
She pulled the emergency brake.
The car spun.
Lily screamed.
Claire turned the steering wheel away from the rock wall.
The vehicle crashed through the guardrail.
Then another memory surfaced.
Before leaving the house, Claire had seen Rebecca beside the kitchen window.
Arthur’s black sedan was parked outside the property gate.
Claire had thought nothing of it.
Now she understood.
“They were together.”
“Rebecca and Arthur?”
Claire nodded.
“I was investigating him.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“He stole from Bennett Global.”
“I found shell accounts.”
“Rebecca knew.”
Claire looked at him.
“I think she helped him.”
Grant sat beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was going to.”
She swallowed.
“But Lily was in the house.”
“I didn’t know what they were capable of.”
“So I hid the evidence.”
Grant looked toward the nursery.
“The box.”
Claire nodded.
“I planned to take Lily to my sister.”
“And then come back to you with everything.”
Her voice cracked.
“I never got the chance.”
Grant looked destroyed.
Claire’s anger softened for one second.
“You didn’t cause the crash.”
“But I brought Arthur into the company.”
“You trusted him.”
“I trusted Rebecca too.”
Claire looked away.
That wound was harder.
Rebecca had been one of her closest friends.
She had stood beside Claire at Lily’s baby shower.
She had held Lily at her first birthday.
She had cried at Claire’s memorial.
The betrayal had been happening inside the family long before anyone saw it.
Lucas arrived at dawn.
He carried newly recovered files.
“We found the original mechanic.”
Grant stood.
“He’s alive?”
“Yes.”
“And scared.”
The mechanic had examined Claire’s car after the crash.
His conclusion had been clear.
The brake line had been deliberately loosened.
Before his report reached police, Arthur Hale appeared with legal documents.
The vehicle was removed.
The mechanic received fifty thousand dollars and a threat.
He stayed silent.
Until now.
Lucas also recovered a toll camera image.
Arthur’s sedan had entered the Bennett estate at 4:12 a.m. on the morning of the crash.
The same morning Rebecca claimed she had slept at her apartment.
Claire stared at the photograph.
“We have them.”
Lucas shook his head.
“We have enough to investigate.”
“Not enough to convict yet.”
Grant’s phone rang.
Daniel Price was calling.
Grant answered.
No one spoke.
Then Daniel whispered.
“Mr. Bennett.”
“They’re in the security room.”
Grant stood.
“Who?”
“Rebecca and Arthur.”
A crash sounded through the phone.
Daniel gasped.
The line went dead.
Grant ran.
But by the time he reached the security wing, the room was empty.
The main server was gone.
So was Rebecca.
So was Arthur.

And upstairs, Lily’s wheelchair sat beside an open bedroom door.
Empty.
