Chapter 18 - THE LAST HIDDEN WITNESS

Claire stared at the photograph.
Michael examined it.
“This was taken before the Mercer medical team filed its rescue report.”
Grant turned it over again.
“Who sent this?”
No one knew.
Lucas traced the package to a courier station in Vermont.
Security footage showed an elderly man wearing a cap.
Facial recognition found a possible match.
Thomas Vail.
Former maintenance supervisor for the mountain highway.
Lucas located him the next day.
Thomas agreed to meet.
His first words changed everything.
“I saw the crash.”
Claire went still.
Thomas looked ashamed.
“I saw another car behind you.”
“Whose?”
“A black sedan.”
“Arthur.”
Thomas nodded.
“After your car went over, the sedan stopped.”
“A man and woman got out.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“They looked over the edge.”
“Did they come down?”
“No.”
“The woman wanted to.”
“The man stopped her.”
Rebecca and Arthur.
Thomas continued.
“I drove to call emergency services.”
“When I returned, I saw someone climbing near the river.”
“You?”
Claire whispered.
Thomas nodded.
“You were alive.”
“I went down.”
“I found you unconscious.”
“Why didn’t you stay?”
Thomas looked at his hands.
“Arthur found me first.”
Grant stood.
“What?”
“He offered money.”
“I refused.”
“Then he showed me pictures of my grandchildren.”
The room went silent.
“He told me rescuers were coming.”
“He said if I told anyone I saw you alive, my family would suffer.”
Thomas wiped his eyes.
“I was a coward.”
Claire looked at him.
“You still called for help?”
“Yes.”
“I anonymously called a private emergency number listed on a Mercer Foundation roadside clinic.”
“That’s why they found you.”
Claire finally understood.
Thomas had saved her life.
Then fear kept him silent.
“Why now?”
He looked at the photograph.
“Because Arthur is in jail.”
“And because I saw the news that you came home.”
Thomas began crying.
“I needed you to know someone knew you were alive.”
Claire reached across the table.
“You gave rescuers my location.”
“You are the reason I survived.”
Thomas looked stunned.
“I left you.”
“You came back enough to save me.”
Grant watched Claire.
She had returned with anger.
But she was learning that not every person who failed her had failed for the same reason.
Some were cruel.
Some were weak.
Some were terrified.
And some eventually chose truth.
That evening, Claire took Lily outside.
They sat near the rose garden.
Lily looked at the stars.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Did you look for me when you forgot me?”
Claire thought carefully.
“I didn’t know who I was looking for.”
“But I always felt like someone was missing.”
Lily smiled.
“That was me.”
Claire touched her hair.
“Yes.”
“That was you.”
Lily reached for her hand.
“I waited too.”
For the first time since returning home, Claire felt the past and present stop fighting each other.

She did not need to become the woman she had been.
She could become the woman who survived.
