Chapter 16 - THE VIDEO REBECCA COULD NOT ERASE

The first recording came from the garage.

Claire watched from Grant’s study.

Rebecca appeared on screen at 4:19 a.m.

Arthur entered two minutes later.

He opened Claire’s hood.

Rebecca stood watch.

Then Arthur crouched beside the brake assembly.

Claire felt Grant’s hand tighten against the chair.

No one spoke.

The second recording came from the morning of the crash.

Claire entered the garage carrying Lily’s overnight bag.

Rebecca followed.

She wrapped the red scarf around Lily.

Then she hugged Claire.

The audio was faint.

But clear enough.

“You always win.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The memory was no longer a fragment.

It was evidence.

The third group of files was worse.

Rebecca entering Lily’s room at night.

Rebecca removing photographs of Claire.

Rebecca forcing Lily to repeat.

“She’s gone.”

Rebecca turning off the heat in the sunroom before pouring cold water over Lily.

Rebecca threatening Evelyn.

Grant could not continue watching.

He stood.

“I did this.”

Claire looked at him.

“No.”

“I let her stay here.”

“You didn’t know.”

“Evelyn tried to tell me.”

“You were grieving.”

“That doesn’t excuse it.”

“No.”

Claire’s answer surprised him.

She continued.

“But guilt won’t help Lily.”

“Believing her will.”

Grant looked toward the doorway.

Lily was there.

Evelyn stood behind her.

Grant immediately closed the laptop.

Lily looked at him.

“You saw?”

Grant knelt.

“Yes.”

“Now you believe me?”

The question shattered him.

He crawled closer to his daughter.

“I should have believed you the first time.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“Rebecca said grown-ups believe other grown-ups.”

Grant shook his head.

“She was wrong.”

“She said because I’m little, I get confused.”

“You weren’t confused.”

“She said Mommy was dead because I was bad.”

Claire gasped.

Grant’s face changed.

Lily continued.

“So I tried to be good.”

“I tried really hard.”

Claire dropped to her knees beside the wheelchair.

“No.”

Lily looked at her.

“My accident was not because of you.”

“My leaving was not because of you.”

“Nothing she did was because of you.”

Lily began crying.

“Really?”

Claire touched her hand.

“Really.”

Grant looked at his daughter.

Then at Claire.

For two years, Rebecca had taken a frightened child’s grief and turned it into obedience.

That damage could not be erased by an arrest.

It would take time.

Truth.

Patience.

And love without conditions.

The next morning, prosecutors charged Arthur Hale with attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, financial crimes, evidence tampering, and obstruction.

Rebecca faced conspiracy, child abuse, kidnapping, intimidation, and related charges.

Daniel accepted a cooperation agreement in exchange for testimony.

The financial theft exceeded forty-three million dollars.

But the money barely mattered anymore.

When reporters gathered outside the courthouse, Rebecca saw Claire standing across the street.

For one second, their eyes met.

Rebecca had once believed taking Claire’s place would make her Claire.

Instead, Claire had returned without her old face and still possessed the one thing Rebecca had never understood.

Lily loved her because she was her mother.

Not because she demanded the title.
