Chapter 17 - A HOME THAT HAD TO LEARN AGAIN

Justice did not make the mansion feel normal.
Claire could not simply walk into her old bedroom and become the woman she had been.
Grant could not remove two years from his life.
Lily could not stop flinching overnight.
So they started small.
Claire stayed in the guest wing.
Grant slept in his old office for several nights because he did not know where he belonged either.
Evelyn remained close to Lily.
No one pressured the child to choose.
On Claire’s fourth morning back, Lily appeared outside her room.
“Can I come in?”
Claire smiled.
“Always.”
Lily rolled herself toward the bed.
She held an old photograph.
It showed Claire before the crash.
“Do you want your old face back?”
Claire sat beside her.
“I can’t.”
Lily studied both the photograph and Claire.
“Are you sad?”
“Sometimes.”
Lily thought about that.
“I like this face too.”
Claire swallowed.
“You do?”
“Your eyes are the same.”
Claire began crying.
Lily looked alarmed.
“Did I say something bad?”
“No.”
Claire laughed through tears.
“You said something perfect.”
Physical therapists began working with Lily again.
The crash had damaged her spine but not severed it.
Doctors believed she could regain more mobility.
Rebecca had quietly discouraged aggressive therapy because Lily’s dependence made her easier to control.
Claire nearly broke a table when she learned that.
Instead, she sat beside Lily through every session.
Some days Lily moved one foot.
Some days she moved nothing.
Every small victory became enough.
Grant watched from doorways.
He did not know how to approach Claire.
Finally, one evening, he asked.
“Do you hate me?”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
“Do you still love me?”
She did not answer immediately.
That hurt more than hatred.
“I remember loving you.”
Grant nodded.
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
He looked away.
“I was going to marry her.”
Claire’s eyes lowered.
“I know.”
“I need you to know something.”
“I never stopped loving you.”
“I stopped believing you were alive.”
Claire whispered.
“I understand.”
“But I don’t know if I can walk back into our marriage.”
“I understand that too.”
Grant looked at her.
“We don’t have to decide tonight.”
For the first time since she returned, Claire smiled at him without sadness.
“No.”
“We don’t.”
From the hallway, Lily watched them.
Then she whispered to Evelyn.
“Daddy still looks at her like before.”
Evelyn smiled.
“You remember that?”
Lily nodded.
“Daddy thinks nobody sees things.”
“He’s wrong.”
Evelyn laughed softly.
Lily looked toward Claire again.
Then her smile disappeared.
A delivery man had entered the foyer.
He carried a package addressed to Claire Bennett.
There was no return address.
Inside was a photograph taken after Claire’s crash.
Claire lay unconscious inside the private medical transport.

On the back, someone had written.
Arthur wasn’t the first person to find you.
