Chapter 10 - THE CAMERA IN THE CLOCK

The camera had been hidden inside a kitchen clock.

Detective Harper did not show us the full video. She said we did not need to see every second to understand what happened.

The recording showed Teresa pressing Frederick’s arm hard enough to leave marks while Martin coached her from behind the camera.

“Not too much,” he said. “It has to look like careless handling, not an attack.”

Then Teresa whispered, “Amy carries him on that side. Connor will believe it.”

I walked into the hospital bathroom and was sick.

When I returned, Amy sat motionless, staring at the floor.

“I kept apologizing to her,” she said. “Every time Frederick had a bruise, I thought I was doing something wrong.”

I knelt in front of her. “You did nothing wrong.”

“She made me doubt my own hands.”

The anger in Amy’s voice was new. It was not loud, but it was stronger than fear.

That day, Teresa was charged with identity theft, forgery, financial exploitation, child endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy. Martin faced many of the same charges, plus kidnapping and arson.

Luke was arrested for helping Teresa escape. He claimed she promised to erase his gambling debts. Police discovered those debts had also been created partly through Teresa’s fraud.

One manipulation feeding another.

Reporters gathered outside the courthouse after details of the case became public. I refused interviews. I did not want Frederick’s first birthday turned into entertainment.

But Teresa wanted attention.

During her first court appearance, she looked directly at the cameras and said, “My son is being controlled by a dangerous woman.”

Amy watched the clip once.

Then she turned it off.

“She still thinks she can shame me into silence,” she said.

“What do you want to do?”

Amy looked at me with clear, steady eyes.

“Testify.”

Her decision frightened me, not because she was weak, but because I finally understood how strong she had been while trapped in that house.

Two days later, our attorney brought another discovery.

The forged deed transfer had not failed.

A county employee had approved it.

On paper, Teresa already owned forty percent of our home.

And the employee who processed it had disappeared.
