Chapter 5 - WHAT WAS IN HIS BLOOD

The nurse said Frederick had a dangerous level of a sedating antihistamine in his system.

Not enough to kill him.

Enough to keep him quiet.

I gripped the desk. “He wasn’t prescribed that.”

“We know,” she said. “The doctor needs to speak with both parents.”

I looked at Teresa.

She avoided my eyes.

Detective Harper heard every word. “Was the child regularly in your mother’s care?”

“Yes.” My voice broke. “Every day while Amy was recovering and I was at work.”

Teresa shouted, “Children’s medicine is easy to confuse! Amy is careless.”

I crossed the room before I realized I was moving.

Ramirez stepped between us.

“You need to go to the hospital,” he said firmly. “Let us handle this.”

Teresa was not arrested yet. Harper said they needed lab confirmation, interviews, and a warrant to search the office on Linden Street. But an officer remained at the house, and my mother was told she could not leave.

At the hospital, Amy sat beside Frederick’s bed under pale fluorescent lights. A tiny monitor beeped near his hand. He looked smaller than ever.

Amy stood when she saw me.

“I should have protected him,” she said.

I pulled her into my arms. “No. I should have listened.”

She trembled against me. “She gave him something every afternoon. She said it was vitamins. He always slept afterward.”

A doctor explained that Frederick would likely recover fully, but child protective services would need to investigate because the exposure appeared repeated.

The words struck like a hammer.

Repeated exposure.

This was not a mistake.

A social worker asked Amy to describe life in the house. Piece by piece, the truth came out. Teresa controlled the money, took Amy’s phone, monitored her calls, hid car keys, and threatened to tell me Amy was unstable. She told relatives Amy was lazy while forcing her to cook and clean.

“She said Connor would choose her,” Amy whispered. “She said mothers always win.”

My phone buzzed.

Detective Harper had sent one sentence:

WE FOUND THE LINDEN STREET OFFICE.

A second message followed with a photograph.

On the wall were pictures of me, Amy, Frederick, our signatures, our schedules, and a copy of our house key.

In the center was a whiteboard titled BRADLEY PROPERTY TRANSFER.
