Chapter 9 - THE RED DOORS

Firefighters moved in while police covered the exits.
I watched from behind a patrol car, every muscle locked. Harper had allowed me near the scene only because I identified the warehouse, but she warned me not to cross the barrier.
The red doors burst open.
Betsy stumbled out coughing, supported by a firefighter. Her wrists were tied with electrical cord. A cut marked her forehead, but she was alive.
“Teresa’s still inside,” she gasped. “Martin started the fire.”
A gunshot cracked from the second floor.
Everyone dropped.
Police shouted commands. Another shot shattered a window above us.
Then Martin appeared on the roof, holding a black backpack. He ran toward the far edge as officers climbed the rear stairs.
Teresa emerged from a side door with both hands raised.
“Help me!” she screamed. “He forced me!”
For one second, she looked like the frightened mother I remembered from childhood.
Then Betsy pointed at her.
“She tied me up,” Betsy said. “Martin wanted to leave. Teresa said I knew too much.”
Teresa’s face hardened.
Police placed her in handcuffs.
Martin tried to jump from the roof to a neighboring loading platform. He missed, crashed onto a metal awning, and was arrested after firefighters brought him down. He survived with a broken leg and a ruined sense of invincibility.
The backpack contained cash, forged IDs, blank checks, and a portable hard drive.
Harper told me the hard drive might hold the entire operation.
At the hospital, Betsy gave a statement. Teresa and Martin had forced her to call relatives and claim Amy had abused Frederick. They wanted the family to support an emergency guardianship petition.
“Why me?” Betsy asked them.
Teresa had answered, “Because Connor trusts you.”
That sentence hurt Betsy more than the ropes around her wrists.
Later that afternoon, Detective Harper visited us with preliminary findings from the hard drive.
“There are videos,” she said. “Your mother recorded conversations inside your home.”
I felt Amy tense beside me.
Harper continued, “One video appears to show the night Teresa created the bruises she planned to blame on Amy.”
“Bruises on whom?” I asked.
May you like
Harper looked toward Frederick’s crib.
“On your son.”
