Chapter 11 - THE COUNTY CLERK

The missing employee was named Owen Pike.

He worked in the county recording office and had approved three suspicious property transfers connected to Martin Vale. Police believed he had accepted bribes to overlook false notarizations.

Our attorney filed an emergency action to freeze any sale or loan tied to the house. Until a judge ruled, we could live there, but the title remained contaminated.

Amy did not want to return.

“Every room has her voice in it,” she said.

We rented a small furnished apartment near the hospital instead. It had cheap carpet, thin walls, and a kitchen barely wide enough for two people.

It felt safer than the house ever had.

Frederick learned to clap there.

For his delayed birthday, Amy placed a single candle in a grocery-store cupcake. Betsy came with a stuffed bear. No liquor. No crowd. No performance.

Just four people singing badly while Frederick laughed.

That laugh nearly broke me.

The case kept expanding. Investigators found more victims, more forged accounts, and more recordings. Teresa had studied everyone’s fears. She knew who worried about debt, who wanted approval, who avoided conflict.

She did not steal only money.

She stole certainty.

A week before the preliminary hearing, Detective Harper called. Owen Pike had been found hiding in a motel outside Memphis.

He agreed to cooperate.

According to Pike, Martin had paid him to approve the deed. But Teresa had demanded something extra: a second document that would become active if Amy died or was declared incompetent.

It transferred full control of the house and Frederick’s guardianship trust to Teresa.

“There is no guardianship trust,” I said.

Harper replied, “There is now.”

Someone had opened one using forged documents and deposited $120,000 into it.

The money came from a life-insurance policy on Amy.

A policy neither of us knew existed.

The beneficiary was Teresa.

The application listed Amy as having a severe untreated heart condition.

Amy was perfectly healthy.

But attached to the application was a medical report signed by a Nashville doctor.

And that doctor was scheduled to meet Teresa in jail the next morning.
